Lesson From My Dad

I woke up early this morning so that I could be sure that I would be able to accomplish a task near and dear to my heart.  I think that it is so because of my dad and his reaction to his nine year old daughter’s distress .    My heart is still so tightly wrapped around that response that it has affected the path I have taken on more than one occasion in my life. ...more

Showing Up

On Saturday evening, I was the coordinator for a wedding. This half hour ceremony and two hour reception were the culmination of several months of planning, changing plans, organizing, making phone calls, running errands, shopping, cooking, sewing and a lot of just plain hard work. The difference in this wedding and most others I do, was that it was for my niece, my brother's daughter. It was a wedding with a tight budget, so a lot of things had to be done by us, instead of paying someone to do them.  ...more

Gift Baking

When Parents Encourage -- or Not (Sweetie)

Last Saturday, we drove to a different part of town for Sam's soccer game. Per the coach's instructions, we arrived a little early so the team could warm up beforehand. Apparently, they needed to work on important athletic skills like not screaming "Monkey nuts!" when the other team gets a goal. Or maybe it was passing, I'm not quite sure. ...more

Organized? Not So Much

I am not an extraordinarily organized person in my everyday life, although I have been taught to be so. If I were able to post a picture of the coffee table or my sewing area right now, I could easily confirm this. I often do not know the latest landing place of my phone, my glasses or my water bottle . Darling husband can attest to this. However, if I am involved in planning a wedding, or even a birthday dinner at home for one of my darlings, I will have lists and notes and ideas all gathered, more or less, in a central location. And though it may appear that there is a haphazardness to it, if I write it down, I have it in my head as well....more

I'll have to let you know how that works out in a future blog post!!! more

Life with my mom

Staring at a blank piece of paper (ahem, blank page on the computer screen in this case) can be somewhat intimidating, especially if one is just committed to writing a little every day. Generally, I am not interested in doing a whole lot of research; I tend to want to write about what I know or perhaps better said, what I think I know. It could be about a book I've read, or something I saw on TV or an incident in my day that caused me to pause....more

And the 2011 Pantone Color of the Year Is...

I've always liked following the annual Pantone Color of the Year announcement. While it may sound a bit like some sort of hollow publicity-generating event, like the worst-dressed list or whether the groundhog saw his shadow, the truth is Pantone's declaration has great influence on fashion and design for the year....more
