(CONTEST) Journey to Motherhood with Ricki Lake

Making my new documentary film series More Business of Being Born, I had the privilege of interviewing some incredible women (Christy Turlington Burns, Alanis Morissette, Cindy Crawford and Gisele Bundchen to name a few) to capture all the intimate details about their children’s births. Admittedly, I am a bit of a birth junkie but really I think that the underlying thrill of birth stories is hearing a woman talk about that indescribable moment when she becomes a mother. ...more

Unsilencing Violence: Where Abuse Survivors Tell Their Stories

Back in early 2009, just after I launched ViolenceUnSilenced.com, a well meaning friend essentially asked me "What’s the point?" It’s not that she didn’t care about victims of domestic violence—she’s a survivor herself, and is very active in her advocacy community. She thinks speaking out is great in theory, but that it should be attached to something more tangible, such as fundraising for a specific charity, agency or shelter. She didn’t think "just talking about it" was enough. Her comment threw me....more

Letting Go of the Great Expectations of Parenting

Throughout my pregnancy I had spent so much time visualizing the little being growing inside me that I actually began assigning it physical characteristics. This was especially ambitious considering I hadn’t found out the sex of my baby. He/She would have my auburn hair and pug nose, I hoped. And Jim’s blue-green eyes, I prayed. Against all reason I even imagined the little peanut with freckles. But when I finally met JP, I didn’t recognize him. ...more

This is What Postpartum Depression Feels Like

So I didn’t send it. That’s a mistake. Friends let me tell you, the moment you have the instant reaction to reach out? DO IT. Trust me. She probably could have talked me through it and it not spiraled the rest of my night. But I kept it to myself, and much like PPD did a year ago, it ate at me. Slowly. In every word said, every action of my child. It’s unnerving. ...more

Christmas After a Miscarriage

It was at that same 8-week appointment, nearly two years before, that we had heard the the first sounds of life from our beautiful Katherine. After a year of trying to get pregnant, finally hearing her heartbeat made her so real, so completely ours. And as we sat, in that very same room, we were thrilled to have her with us as we prepared to hear her sibling's heartbeat for the first time. ...more
