What is Creativity?

On my 26th birthday (in a few days), I'm starting a year long exploration of "creativity." Before deciding to start this project, I had to spend some time thinking about what creativity is. Is it a thought process that can be learned? A kind of mental muscle that can be trained? An innate characteristic that I can only hope to imitate? As with most things, I believe that the potential for creativity is in each of us and it manifests itself more easily for some. But, with the right training, practice, inspiration - or... something - we can all boost our creative tendencies....more

Soft Snickerdoodle Cookies

After a fairly calm and mild winter, work on the farm is starting up again. Russell is working long days to get ready for the upcoming planting season - which means he has to get up early on weekends to go check sprinklers.Selfishly, I love my early weekend mornings, alone with my coffee and without any real obligations. I spend these precious hours leisurely reading outside or baking while watching girly movies. Truly, I don't think that there is anything more pleasant than watching Pride and Prejudice with a batch of cookies in the oven....more

Spicy Bacon Mac and Cheese

One of my 30 before 30 goals is to learn to cook better. Now that I cook 2 or 3 meals almost every day, I have plenty of opportunity to work on that goal. Over the last few months, I’ve tried tons of recipes, some of which have been truly fantastic. So, I’ve decided to start a regular recipe review on my blog. If you have a recipe that you’d like to share, e-mail it to andruswilliams2010 (at) gmail (dot) com....more

Roasted Pepper and Tomato Salad

Last weekend, a few friends came to West Texas for a girl’s weekend. We don’t have a lot of restaurants in the area, so I cooked most of the meals for the weekend. I didn’t want my time with them to be spent slaving away in the kitchen, so I tried to pick meals that I could prepare in advance. One dish that I made, and that they all asked for me to post online ASAP, was a roasted pepper and tomato salad, served with fresh french bread....more

Vanilla Strawberry Trifle and a Giveaway

Some of my closest friends visited the farm this weekend. We made cake balls and pops for a barn dance that my brother- and sister-in-law hosted. Before my friends came to town, I read a bajillion different blogs about cake pops and the common problems that people have. And they still didn’t turn out just right. Too much icing, I think. But, we still had a lot of fun making and decorating them....more

Oatmeal Muffins with Nutella Frosting

This past weekend, my husband and I went to the Big City (I never thought I would describe a city of 270,000 as "big") to buy a grill and outdoor furniture - neither of which we got.Instead, we drove an hour and a half so that a piece of equipment could be stolen from his truck while we were eating lunch. Good times. But, I did find Nutella, so I guess it wasn't a total waste of a day....more

My Grandma's Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Instead of going to day care growing up, I was blessed to stay with my grandparents during the summers and after school. In that time we had together, they taught me so much. My grandfather taught me what true love and compassion looks like. How a man can be so strong and yet so kind. That a real man carries a pocket knife. How to garden and grow beautiful things. My grandmother set the example in our family to be a strong, educated, successful woman. She patiently taught me how to sew. She taught me to cook and instilled a passion for baking....more
