Meal Plan Monday, September 17

Anyone following my updates last week on Chatter or Instagram might have noticed that we did a LOT around the house last week. First, the fake husband sealed the driveway. Verdict? Easy to do on our own but man, that stuff is stinky. He power washed everything from the deck to the siding. We painted the bathroom and it's no longer yellow. I actually like yellow and it was a nice shade of yellow but it didn't go with anything else in the bathroom which is blue/grey. So now we have a grey bathroom with newly spray painted white shelves and we sigh happily every time we enter it.

Our 9/11 Stories: Share Your Posts About September 11, 2001

Editor's note: Last year, we called for you to share your posts on the events of September 11, 2001. More than 200 bloggers responded. We're honoring this tradition again this year, and invite you to read these bloggers' stories and contribute your own. -- Julie We've seen a LOT of stories in the media about the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Flight 93. We've also seen, and maybe felt, that many of us are sick of the story in the media. ...more

When A Mother Loses A Child

The unimaginable happens. A mother loses a child. This happened just now. To Anna See who blogs at An Inch of Gray. And because we are all so connected, by our stories and our words and our electronics and our RSS feeds and Tweets, the news goes around like an electric shock, touching not only those who knew her, her family, her writing, but also spinning out to so many of those who didn't. ...more

A Mother's 18th Birthday Letter to Her Son -- in Heaven

To My Son, Austin -- If you were here today, I'd wish you a Happy Birthday and tear up thinking how quickly you grew up. No more Momma's Little Blair Bear, but a young man. If you were here today, I'd stand tiptoe to reach my arms around your neck and squeeze you back with one those famous Bear hugs you were known for....more

Do You Worry About the Lyrics Your Kids Are Singing?

I was at a kid’s party and "Teenage Dream" came on the Sirius XM pop station. Surveying the room, the seven-year-olds were singing let you put your hands on me in my skin-tight jeans as free and easy as the Spongebob Squarepants theme. One of the mom’s was outraged by the overt sexual nature of the lyrics. “This music is entirely inappropriate,” she said, her face contorted with judgment, as if the kids not only understood the machinations of baby-making and the implications of pubescent lust, they were colluding with Katy Perry’s fantasy to have the same happen to them....more

Learning to Talk About the Loss of Our Son

Writing through the loss of my oldest son has been healing for me. Words have just flowed. In the nearly 600 posts through the past three years, I've never had writer's block, never struggled to put my thoughts to the page. But talking about the loss out loud is quite the opposite. I either clam up or tears flow so steadily it prohibits me expressing what I want to say. And that angers me. I want to share Austin's story with others. From the outpouring of support I've received on both my blogs, I know our journey has helped others. What hurts is that I can't have and share that connection in person....more

The God Box: Making Your Faith Real

We here at BlogHer were so inspired by Mary Lou Quinlan's latest book, The God Box. In the book, Mary Lou describes finding the boxes her mother used to store prayer requests and thanks after her mother's death, a veritable history of her mother's psyche. It's true sometimes we all need a place to put our challenges and our hopes -- just to get them out of our heads so we can focus on the present. Have you ever wanted a God Box? Now we have one that can go anywhere....more
