Blogger Beware: You CAN Get Sued For Using Photos You Don't Own on Your Blog

One of the things I learned early on was that a post with a photo always looked nicer than one with just text. So I looked at what other people were doing for pictures.  And mostly it seemed that everyone was grabbing pics from Google Images and pasting them on their sites. Sometimes with attribution, most of the time without. And when I asked others (or looked at disclaimers on websites and Tumblrs), it seemed that everyone agreed using pics that way was okay under Fair Use standards. ...more

Over-50 Olympics: The "This Ain't No Game" Games

I've always loved the Olympics.  I can't say that I watch as much of it on TV as I did when I was younger.  Not sure if that's because I don't have as much free time, or because there are so many other viewing choices since the advent of cable TV.  But, still, who can't help but get that warm and fuzzy, patriotic feeling watching our young, strapping Olympic athletes in the prime of their life, accomplishing their ultimate goal, while the rest of us lead a disappointing, unfulfilled exis..... oh, wait, that's me, but anyway........more
Fair enough. But "them" is me, just for the record. more

Beautiful Evelyn

I was on a cross country flight recently on my way to visit family.  I boarded the plane and sat down next to an older lady who smiled at me even though I accidentally bumped her arm with my bag. The lady appeared to be African-American, quite small in frame.  She was seated next to the window, with her sweater cupped over her shoulders like a blanket....more

Stop Inviting My Kid to Church: Religion Is Not for Children

Recently, a few of Miss N's friends have been sincerely inviting her to church. This part will be touchy for people who do not believe the same as we do and I respect that; I'll raise my kids and you can raise yours. I do not think religion is for children. I think that they should be exposed to the beliefs of all people, and while I will tell my children "this is what Mommy and Daddy believe," I do not expect her to believe the same thing. I'll ask Miss N what she thinks -- and she has some really amazing thoughts on the matter -- but I will not tell her she is wrong if she disagrees with me about the big beliefs....more

Rebel Just Because

You know, I haven’t been real thrilled about turning 50, my “assigned number” for about the last 6 months.  I admit, I had some problems initially adjusting to the ‘new era’ and all that.  I nearly choked the first time I had to state my age at the doctor’s office… “F..f...f..if…uh..uh….fifty”.  They probably thought I’d had a stroke.    But, I’m slowly getting OK with the idea of being 50.  It’s better than the alternative, right?...more
