Honesty in National Adoption Awareness Month

November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Historically, the purpose was to draw attention to children in foster care and their need for permanency. Bravo to then Governor Dukakis in 1976 for getting things moving.Today, the campaign is used widely and for a host of opportunists—whether it’s an unethical agency trying to increase revenue or Petsmart promoting pet adoption. We’ve blurred the intention of adoption awareness and moved, in many ways, the wrong direction....more

A Letter to My Daughter's First Mom: I'm Angry with You

Dear A, You don’t know me, but we share something huge -- a child. I am L’s mother. I think of myself as her Last Mom because she had many before me, starting with you. You were her First Mom and I love and am grateful to you for bringing her into the world. I am also frequently filled with anger at you....more

An Ode to Foster Children

I mother you, and yet you are not my child.  You belong to another.  You came to us, frightened and confused.  It pained my heart to see you so emotionally immature and bruised.  I couldn't comfort you, nor you me.  Thrust together, strangers, we became a small family.  Our close-knit home quickly became a sanctuary to keep us all away from harm, and within its walls I sought answers.  Who are you?  How can I help you?...more

Did you share your family medical history at the table this Thanksgiving?

After learning I was adopted I found a public service link in an email sent by Web MD about National Family History Day.  It explained how the Surgeon General officially declared Thanksgiving  a day of sharing medical history."Creating a health record will make it easier for every family member to preserve his or her health," the Acting Surgeon General said.  Here's the press release from 2007....more

Who Needs TV Adoption Drama When Late Discovery Adoptees Live It?

Whether its a TV show about adoption, The Lying Game, or a story line that comes up on most prime-time programming, many of us feel as though a nicely healing scab has been ripped off. At the very least, its a reminder of something we do not need to be reminded about. Most in the adoption constellation (birth parents, adoptees, adoptive parents, adoption professionals) would love nothing more than to ask TV writers to at least do a good job writing their 48 minute segment....more

CPS Showed Up at My Door: An On-Going Lesson in Consequences

I received a knock on my door this afternoon, and when I answered it I was met by a small, blonde woman who announced that she was from child protective services and she needed to talk to me. If you've never had that experience (and I hope you never have), let me try to describe how it feels. Your heart starts racing. Your mind starts spinning, frantically trying to recall something -- anything -- that could warrant a visit from CPS. I was in full panic mode, but trying my very best to hold it together. Or to at least not pass out....more
