I Didn't Know You Had a Mixed Baby!

[Editor's Note: Being in a mixed-race family myself, I don't always think about the fact that we are a mixed-race family. Then sometimes, I get a comment which reminds me of the fact-- in a way that calls a little too much attention to it. And I live in the Bay Area, where interracial marriage is quite common. Michelle Parrinello-Cason of Balancing Jane writes about being a white woman living in St. Louis, and the kind of reactions she hears when people see a photo of her bi-racial daughter, who is half-black....more

Celebrating Christmukkah? Ideas for Your Celebration

That year, I asked her if she wanted to celebrate Hanukkah, to honor her Holocaust-surviving family’s legacy. I had researched the basics of the holiday, its meaning, and its traditions at school and a little online and I knew what we needed to procure and mostly how it worked. I thought this would be a way to start our own traditions together, and to show her that her family history was just as important to me as that of my paternal family’s. ...more

5 Steps Toward a Nontoxic Home

We are exposed to toxins on a daily basis, but just how much depends on the foods we eat, the furniture we sit on, the lotions we decide to put on our bodies and the products that surround us.The degree to which we potentially put our children’s health at risk depends on the different products we decide to bring into the house. Their exposure to toxins begins before they are even born. Whatever we inhale or ingest can have a lasting effect on our children....more

The Green Period

By now. most of us savvy gals shop with reusable bags, you know, the cute and stylish ones (not the free bland-o given out for spending $100 at your local shop-n-save. Ok, maybe those too.) And use reusable water bottles of the glass and metal variety, also with aesthetics in mind. Or not. ...more

Pervasive and Harmful: Phthalates

Ok so it’s a little hard to pronounce, I know.  The first time I heard of phthalates (thal-ates) I had flash backs to high school chemistry class and it wasn’t pleasant. But it wasn’t when I was sixteen, but rather as an adult when I learned about phthalates, a class of chemicals linked to a host of effects like hormone disruption, birth defects, and decreased sperm count. I was simply trying to find safe lotion, make-up and shampoo. Little did I know where my path would lead....more

Be Green Now: 8 Quick Fixes to Make Your Life a Little More Green

For a long time I felt that being environmentally conscious or "green" was out of my reach. We couldn't afford to buy 100% organic everything or install solar panels on our house and I felt like there wasn't much else I could do.To make myself feel better I focused on the things I was doing and tried not to think about all the chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, and pesticides that were making their way into our home via cleaning products and non-organic food.

I think this is a great and and simple  organized first step for many of green beginners!! ... more
