Why I Told My Daughter She Didn't Have to Go to College

"I'm not sure I want to go to college," my daughter said to me. I guess the look on my face made it pretty clear what I thought of that, and she hastily amended it with, "For the first year, I mean." "You want to take a year off?" I clarified. "Yeah. I just don't think I need to start right away." I chewed my lip, considering my words carefully. ...more

Sting Cuts His Children Out of His Will. Could You Do the Same?

I'm glad Sting didn't have a chance to talk to my dad before he died. He would have really poisoned my deal. Sting announced today that he wouldn't be leaving his $300 million to his six children, but intended to spend it instead; he said he expected them to make their own way in the world. He didn't want his children to have the albatross of trust funds around their necks. I understand but wonder. ...more

7 Ways to Use That Container of Baby Spinach

These days, spinach doesn't come in one overgrown bunch, it comes in a clamshell. You know, those large, clear plastic containers stuffed with perfectly picked baby leaves.  I am sure you have bought one,  with ambitions to use all those greens, only to have it slowly wilt away in your refrigerator.  You meant well, you really did. There is WHAT?!? in Our Bread?

The lunch line at my local Subway store is long. The ads in the window tout the flatbread sandwich specials. I’m pleased that the restaurant has made a move to remove azodicarbonamide from the bread they use for their sandwiches. This chemical additive is banned in United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, though it is commonly found in American products.  It has been linked to causing asthma and other respiratory problems. ...more

Me and My Non-Smart Phone (The Day I Realized that I'm a Fuddy-Duddy)

My kids swear that we are the last people on earth to not have a data plan with our phone service. They might be right too. Having just a regular cell phone—texting option only—is such a rarity that when I recently tried to replace my old phone, the Pink Dinosaur, as my daughter called it, I couldn’t. AT&T offered only one model of phone without data plans. I call it extortion, a phone company’s empire forcing me to comply with their money-making scheme. My kids call it keeping up with the times. ...more

Why Cinderella Is Not Invited to My Daughter's Birthday Party

My daughter is not a feminist. She is an almost-three-year-old tornado whose favorite color is blue, but who enjoys dressing in pink and purple tulle and dancing around, proclaiming, "I'm a PRINcess!" To which I respond, invariably: "You are always a princess, because you're smart, and beautiful, and kind." (Or some drek-y thing along those lines.) Because, really, what else can you say that is uncomplicated enough for a well-indoctrinated three-year-old girl to understand? ...more
