My Memories of Eating Below the Poverty Line

Last week, various folks participated in a campaign called Live Below the Line to bring awareness to living on $1.50 a day. The goal is to experience what it is like to ration your money to buy food. Not good food, not healthy food. Just food. I feel somewhat detached. Now anything that will help a child get near nutrition needs is okay with me. It is just that...well, I remember being a kid in that situation. ...more

Operation: FreeMom -- Let Go of SuperMom This Year

Yes. That’s me. At a friend’s wedding. She sent me this photo with the caption: “This is what happens when a mom gets out for a night without the kids!” I cracked up because it’s true, but I was sad because I don’t have this much fun very often. Being a mom can be hard. And I started thinking. This is the thought I keep thinking: There is too much pressure to be SuperMom. ...more
Ha ha - I love this. Yes, let's stop one upping each other on who's got the better birthday ... more

Do You Want Guns in Schools? The NRA Does

After a week of what was thought to be respectful, even remorseful, silence on the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shootings, the NRA took to the podium this morning, with… shall we say, both barrels blazing. National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre addressed the media in Washington D.C. with the message that the only way to keep our children safe is to put armed security guards in schools....more
Oh my gosh. This is so ridiculous. I agree with you, Grace. Where are the guns going to be ... more

The Magical Post-Breakup Makeover

After a breakup, particularly one you did not initiate, your self confidence can take a bit of a beating. During this time my friends and I frequently turned to the magical healing powers of a post-breakup makeover. We would change our hair or buy a new outfit and they became our new armour against the hurt....more

How Soon Is Too Soon For Couples Therapy?

Since I had not read Bared to You, the first book in Sylvia Day's Crossfire series, I was surprised to find that Eva and Gideon were in couple's counseling. Based on what I had read to that point in Reflected in You, their relationship still seemed young and new. By Eva's own admission, they hadn't been together that long:...more
Honestly, I don't think I would go into couples therapy early in a relationship. I think if it's ... more

What Does Independence Mean To You?

At some point, we all strive for a little independence in our lives. We want to make our own decisions -- call the shots. We want to control our own destiny. Eva, the main character in Sylvia Day's Reflected in You, craved independence from an early age, in large part due to the fact that in many ways her mother was dependent on the men in her life. ...more
For me, independence is being able to make my own decisions. I don't make them in vacuum - I ... more

How Do You Recharge?

Sometimes, we all need a little time to recharge. We each have our own way of doing that. Sometimes we do it alone. Other times we call upon our friends and loved ones to help us recharge our batteries. In Sylvia Day's Reflected in You, Eva recharges with her best friend, Cary. ...more
The best way I recharge is by taking out time for myself. If I had the means, I'd do a spa day a ... more

We're Raising Individuals, Not a Group

We’ve never been good at one-on-one time with our kids. I’ve always thought it would be neat to date each son -- a few hours alone with just one child sounds wonderful and important. When the thought of mother-child dates crossed my mind, I quickly answered myself with a lengthy list of why this novel idea is an impossibility. Where would I find the time? It would be expensive. Four kids, four dates, plus dating my spouse -- that’s an awful lot of dating, money, and scheduling. I would need a tournament bracket to organize this endeavor. Or a spreadsheet. Those give me irritable bowel syndrome....more

Sending My Kids to a Daycare That Doesn't Show Dracula

The teachers were all young and had long hair. One worked part-time as a nude model for artists. One had only a stub for an index finger -- he told us that he cut it off with a knife so that he wouldn’t have to go to Vietnam. I used to imagine him holding the knife and wondered how he was able to do it. The place was dark and filthy. There were no rules, just a misguided idea that the children should be responsible for everything from naming the school to working out violent fights. It was a lot like Lord of the Flies, but with preschoolers....more
