When a Not-So-Small Town is Struck: Rape Culture

I’m trying to articulate my thoughts.  They are jumbled, scattered, yet so, so clear in my mind.  It’s the words that aren’t coming together right.  Like a jigsaw puzzle, I am turning each piece over, observing its defining characteristics, and hunting down its precise place....more

Understanding Bieber's Drug Use from a Mom's Point of View

It came out today that Justin Bieber tested positive for marijuana and Xanax. I am not surprised. Justin started out as a kid who just wanted to sing. Then something happened that changed his life. He got the chance. Since he was 12 years old, people have made fun of his music, his face, his hair -- and not in nice ways either. Even with his recent arrest the Internet thought it important to compare his mug shot to Miley Cyrus. ...more

Dear Concern Troll: It’s Not Me, It’s You

I can get behind a lot of that thinking, though I do believe that there’s one key point that we need to keep in mind when we’re having these discussions. The goal should be to be honest without being hurtful. Too often in our society, we turn to barbed comments and snarky remarks to address things that we don’t like about someone else. Often, these remarks are in the guise of concern, hence the term “concern-trolling.” ...more

Unconditional Love: Reality or Myth?

I've long held the belief that there is no such thing as "Unconditional Love". When I say this, most people balk at my opinion and attempt to explain why they believe there is such a thing. I'm always curious about why people feel the need to explain, by way of laying out real conditions, that unconditional love exists. What is it about challenging the idea of love being free of conditions that makes people so defensive? Is it because, for some, it loses its whimsy and seems more perfunctory? I'm not sure....more

I See Sexism

Sometimes I think I'm going crazy, only I know I'm not, because other women tell me they notice the same thing. It's complicated, and it's hard to keep it in focus sometimes, but it really is there. I don't see dead people, I don't hear voices -- I just see gender distinctions being made where other people see ... nothing out of the ordinary. Business as usual. The same ol' same ol'. Has this ever happened to you? ...more

I Can't Connect with My Daughter

Today the truth is just too hard to say aloud or to even write out on this blank screen that always allows me to explore my thoughts and feelings without regard to judgment or insecurities. But not today. Not about this. Not this truth. This truth breaks my heart and I fear that by spelling it out letter-by-letter, word-by-word, I am willing it into existence. Because right now I can pretend that this only is true in my heart and in my head. But by speaking it aloud, I have an irrational fear that she will feel the same way, too. And that crushes me to my very core....more

I Left BlogHer '13 Feeling Like a Loser, but Maybe I'm Just on My Own Path

I left BlogHer '13 feeling like a loser. This was not the fault of the hardworking women who organized and led the event. BlogHer is the world's largest blogging conference for women and I felt quite privileged to have had the opportunity to travel to Chicago for this year's event, which was held July 25-27. The breakout sessions were informative and to call the keynote speakers inspiring would be an understatement. I was in awe of the confidence of Ree Drummond (better known as the Pioneer Woman) and can't count how many times she made me laugh out loud. ...more
