"He's Not the Sun": Cristina Yang and Barbara Walters' Last Message to Women about Having it All

Sandra Oh has left Grey's Anatomy, and frankly, now that she's gone, there is no other reason to watch the show. For me, she was the show, and for the past nine years, I only tuned in to watch how her character, Cristina Yang, would break yet another stereotype, yet another normative female behavior. And she never failed me....more

HOW TO SPOT A SOCIOPATH, PART TWO

More red flags!Red Flag He's convinced he's smarter than you. One well-known drug dealer told me he made more in a week than I made in a year. (Sadly, this was probably true). I reminded him that he was the one sitting in handcuffs in an orange jumpsuit, serving eight to ten in a maximum security prison....more

I Choose My Kids Over Friends and Me-Time

A friend is having a fabulous 40th birthday getaway in a few months. It involves a short flight and a drive and some fabulous scenery and spa and an overnight stay at a great house. Guests are making their plans for flying in from all over the place and it looks like a really good time. I'll be sending my regrets. It's not the money, or the schedule, or even childcare, really, that is keeping me away. Those things can be worked out. It's this person right here. He has spent every night of his short 20 months firmly tucked in against my side and nursing when he wakes before drifting off to sleep again. ...more

IS YOUR TO-DO LIST DRIVING YOU CRAZY?

Dr. Oz calls them N.U.T.S. They’re the “nagging, unfinished tasks” the nibble at the edge of our consciousness, interfere with our thought processes, and chisel away at our creativity. They’re the racing thoughts that keep us awake at night, and dog us throughout our busy day. Our thoughts scramble with endless to-do lists and we can’t focus on any one thing.Shrinks call them “intrusive thoughts,” and we’re all prone to them. I think that writers are especially vulnerable to NUTS because there is something intrinsically “unfinished” about the work of a novelist....more

Sexist Flap: Should Elisabeth Hasselbeck Be Angry at Bill Maher?

I did not watch The View yesterday. Did you? But apparently I missed quite the spat between Real Time host Bill Maher and The View’s conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Who confronted Maher over a joke the comedian made last February about her and CBS News correspondent Lara Logan, suggesting that Egypt trade Logan, who was then being held hostage, for the less hot Hasselbeck. ...more
