Making Homemade Chinese 5-Spice Powder

We're lucky enough to live down the street from a health food store that sells spices in bulk. So, when it comes to cooking we are two lucky, lucky people. We can go and buy small amounts of a lot of different spices and get out of there without spending more than 5 dollars. That allows us a lot of freedom to play with different spices and to create our own spice blends. For gifts this year, we made our own curry, Chinese five spice and Moorish blends for gifts and holiday cooking. ...more

Beet Greens on Orzo with a Spicy Basil Cream Sauce

We received some beautiful beet greens in our CSA, but there weren't enough to make a full side dish of greens alone. So I decided to try something different. Instead of spinach with pasta why not have sauteed beet greens with orzo and a spicy basil sauce? It was a delicious combination of fresh greens and a decadent cheese sauce.Beet Greens on Orzo with a Spicy Basil Cream Sauce½ box cooked orzo...more

Twice-Baked Red Potatoes Stuffed with Squash and Cheddar Cheese

This is the first year that we have done a winter CSA, and it has been amazing so far. We have been receiving vegetables that I never dreamed of – and a lot of them. Did you know brussels sprouts come on a stalk? I didn't. But we have a big beautiful stalk in the fridge right now. We also have received parsnips, bok choy, celeriac, potatoes, onions, leeks, cabbage, arugula, beets, herbs and scallions. I'm in heaven.  ...more

Kneaded Kale Salad

We are in for a "dangerous" heatwave for the rest of the week. So, I decided to make this salad with the kale that we received from our CSA on Thursday. The lemon tenderizes the kale until it's soft, but still has body.I have a feeling that this salad is going to be our dinner for the next few days. But I don't mind, it's lemony and tart and should keep us going until the temperature drops back down to 88 on Saturday....more

Beef braised in wine with summer savory

I haven't had beef in 15 years. I used to live on red meat, but I burned out on it in 1996 and have rarely looked back. Then last week happened. That's when I started craving beef and I decided to jump back into the world of red meat with style.Beef and root vegetables braised with red wine sauce and topped with bacon and summer savory. To quote George Costanza from Seinfeld, "I'm back, baby!"...more

Garlic Scape Pesto on Grilled Scallops

We received a bunch of garlic scapes in our CSA a couple of weeks ago and we are getting more this week. But, I don't get to enjoy the garlic fun. For some reason I just really have never acquired a taste for it. But, I made this pesto for my husband and he was as happy as a garlic lover could be. He loved the citrus playing off of the garlic with the nuts and cheese bringing up the rear. The meal also had the bonus of being just the right size for a hot summer night....more

Hot Summer Night (No-Bake) Macaroni and Cheese With Panko Topping

So, we after we received our CSA,  the first thing I thought when I looked at all of those beautiful vegetables and herbs was, “Wow. I want macaroni and cheese.” I never claimed to be rational. ...more

Spicy grilled pork with cilantro pesto

We received a bunch of cilantro in our C.S.A. and I decided to make something other than pico de gallo with it. I thought cilantro pesto might play off the spicy pork in a more subtle way, but I was wrong. It wasn't subtle at all – it was rich and spicy and the next time I make it I'm going to triple the recipe. Because this only made about a cup, and the day after the dinner my husband and I were being terribly polite to each other....more

Curried Leeks in Phyllo Cups

Sometimes a woman just wants appetizers for dinner.  I am a woman.  And I occasionally make appetizers for dinner.  There. I have admitted my shameful food secret.  But it's really not shameful when there are leeks and curry involved.  ...more
