New Kansas Law Could Allow Spanking of Children that Causes Redness and Bruising: Say What?

A few months ago, I was at a "mommy's night" house party with some women I don't know very well. As the wine flowed, so did the conversation, each of us bringing to the table our recent anecdotes, exciting stories and frustrations. At some point, one of the women started in on how much her children were annoying her lately. She related stories of back talk, open defiance and sibling in-fighting, and we all nodded our heads sympathetically. Then she said something that made my blood run cold: "My hand actually hurts from all the spankings I've had to give lately." ...more

The New Female Reformers: Nikki Haley

This why so many conservative women are bewildered when liberal women reject us from the ranks of feminism. Compared to fighting the sexism and corruption that still exists within some pockets of the Republican Party, whining about choice seems frivolous. We're working to weed out corruption and eliminate barriers to political involvement. They're parading rusted coat hangers around. While we're advocating for policies that reduce taxes and help everyday Americans, they seem stuck in a time warp. ...more

GOP Gov. Kasich Explains Women's Roles: The Wives Are Doing Laundry!

[Editor’s note: Ohio Governor John Kasich has some quaint notions about women. For starters he pays his female staffers less than the men because, you know, us little women don’t need as much money. But the Republican governor’s latest remark at a rally about the wives of Romney and Ryan was unbelievably boneheaded even for him. Joseph has the story at Plunderbund.--Mona] In this little clip from the speech, Kasich talks about his (“hot“) wife, and the wives of Romney and Ryan, and the reasons they couldn’t be at the event today: ...more

I Was Verbally Accosted Over My Obama Yard Sign

The scene: My driveway, late afternoon. I was loading the kids up to go to JP's doctor's appointment and was in the middle of buckling XC into his car seat. A shiny blue RAV4 pulled alongside the curb, passenger window rolled down. I glanced up to see an older woman (late 60's, early 70's) leaning towards me. "You...you have little children. I just...I just don't understand...it's irresponsible..." Hang on. What?...more

Not Stale: Women's Issues in the Presidential Campaign

It's bad enough when men assume women are single issue voters, but it's far, far worse when a fellow woman has decided that if I have a deal-breaker issue, I must be a zombie following 'rhetoric' spewed by a given political party....more
