Why Moms Can't Get Sick

There should be a law against mothers getting sick. A law of nature. Of our biological composition. So that from the second we commence our 24-hour-a-day vocation of raising children from scary 104-feverish infants through whining-hormonal teenage years, we never experience a single lapse in energy. ...more

Summer Can Suck It

Dear Mouthy Housewives, I hate summer. I know that makes me seem weird, but I just do. I live in a very hot state and I’m miserable whenever I’m outside in 90 degree plus temperatures. Plus I can't stand the unstructured-ness of the kids being home from school. I wish I wasn't such a malcontent and no fun, so what can I do to get through the summer without being crabby? Signed,Summer Grinch...more
Sorry, I ate summer too:( I cheer up with the frost loin leaf. Am in ecstasy with first snow fall. more

Taking Away Mom's Keys: How Old Is Too Old to Drive?

For the interrogation, a lady with a clipboard asked politely if I would "step away" from the window so she could interrogate my mother about what happened when she drove her car into the wall of the carpet store. When she mistook the gas for the brake pedal. I sat on a bench -- just within earshot of my mother referring repeatedly to the brake as the "clutch." What she learned to drive on what, a good, 75 years ago? I wanted to pinch her. I could swear, above all the raucous of sorry waiting souls in this enormous DMV room, I could actually hear the mad scribbling of Clipboard Lady. "So you weren't driving a standard then." "What standard? I was driving my car." ...more

Learning to Talk About the Loss of Our Son

Writing through the loss of my oldest son has been healing for me. Words have just flowed. In the nearly 600 posts through the past three years, I've never had writer's block, never struggled to put my thoughts to the page. But talking about the loss out loud is quite the opposite. I either clam up or tears flow so steadily it prohibits me expressing what I want to say. And that angers me. I want to share Austin's story with others. From the outpouring of support I've received on both my blogs, I know our journey has helped others. What hurts is that I can't have and share that connection in person....more
