How to make a simple camera cake

I took a camera class recently, and of course everyone started joking that I should bring a cake to the last class. So I did a quick camera cake to amuse myself. This is not a detailed cake, it took me exactly 2 hours and 45 minutes to make. There was no reason to spend a ton of time on it since it was kind of a joke, and I was just doing it for fun. Sometimes you can make a cake that isn't totally accurate and it's just fine! ...more

Cake Craft Magazine Giveaway

I have a bunch of back issues of Cake Craft and Decoration magazine that I don't really need...So I'm giving them away! This is going to be a different type of giveaway, since I'll choose three winners who will be able to choose which issues they would like to have. The first place winner will have first choice, then the second place winner will choose, and the third place winner gets what's left (sorry about that.) I have at least nine issues, so each winner will get at least three magazines. ...more

What Not To Do When Someone Dies

We seem to have had a lot of death in my family in the last few months. First my Grandmother, who was 94, and now my Mother In Law, who was 91. They both died relatively quickly after deciding that their times had come and they were ready to go, so that was good in the grand scheme of things. What isn't so good is the fact that old ways of handling the aftermath of a death don't seem to go along with modern life. I noticed this a little after my mother died about 5 years ago, but it's really hit home this past week....more

The Modern Way Of Death Really Sucks

My grandmother died last week, an event that was both sudden and expected. Sudden because it happened relatively quickly, after a fall that sent her briefly to the hospital for a knee xray and ended a week later with her on hospice care in the nursing home where she lived.Expected, though, because she was 94, and nobody lives forever. She had been declining in the past year, and when I spoke to her on the phone she often seemed confused and very, very tired....more

Food Allergies--Everybody's Doing It

I was discussing this with some of my baker friends recently, and we've all seen this even though we live in different parts of the country. Having a food allergy seems to be a trendy thing these days. It's not unusual for people to tell me that they have a peanut allergy, or a dairy allergy, or a wheat allergy, or whatever. They usually wait to say something until they're taking a bite from a sample cake, though, which sends me into a panic.Just as I'm trying to knock the fork out of their hands, they'll inevitably say "Oh, it's okay. I can eat a little, it's no big deal."...more
