I “Made the Cut” and Donated 12-Inches of My Hair

Well, I did it; with a commitment of a promise “I made the cut”! I went to the hair salon and did willingly gather all the beautiful long strands of my hair into a clump and had it cut—12 inches of it, in fact—and donated my long-time pride-and-joy to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. My contribution of love to a movement that campaigns to create free wigs—using real hair—for women that have been affected by hair-loss due to cancer treatment. Today I proudly stand with the many thousands that have already contributed to this awesome and charitable cause....more

On Easter I Celebrate the Resurrection of My Savior

With Palm Sunday right around the corner, celebrating Easter is on my mind. This Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013, I will gather with mi familia and celebrate our Risen Lord; we will color hardboiled eggs, give our grandchildren candies and chocolates (that we hope and pray will not give them cavities), and finally sit together to a fine meal where we will hold hands and together give praise and heartfelt thanks for God’s gift to us, Jesus, His Son—The Sacrificial Lamb of God....more

Just LET GO and Then LET GOD!

One of my all-time favorite hymns I learned in church was, “Be still and know that I Am God....” [Psalm 46:10]. When my heart was troubled and I felt discouraged with how my life was going, I’d sing this song, and it brought immediate comfort to me. Today, when I am afraid, when I am confused, I will sing, lifting my voice to Him in praise, and my spirit calms. That is when I am reminded that I am not alone. He is and always has been a “light unto my path.”...more

Brown-Sugar & Cinnamon Preserved Ponderosa Lemons

The condiment “preserved lemon”—lemons brined (or pickled) in salt and spices, and then allowed to ferment/ripen for many weeks (or months)—is widely used in Moroccan, Indian and North Africa cuisine. And since I have Ponderosa lemons growing on my property, and that I love sweet and sour combinations, I decided to create my own concoction for preserving lemons; I added the molasses flavor that comes from brown sugar....more

elaineR.N. and HomeRearedChef Share Wine and Time at Picchetti

Time enough has passed for two BlogHer bloggers—virtual amigas for the past almost two years—to finally meet, face-to-face. And what better setting to have as a first-time rendezvous—appropriately, for talking and getting to know each other—for breaking bread, than at a favored winery over a glass (or two!) of wine. And that’s after having already sampled little tastes from the winery’s variety of finest elixir. Now let me share some details about our delightful afternoon....more

Might Your Neighbor Have Too Many Christmas Lights?

Are you annoyed that your neighbor has gone all-out to decorate his/her home for Christmas? Is it too much with all that glitzy bling-bling? But perhaps you didn’t decorate this year and therefore can’t compete? Or could it be that you are just jealous and have become a real life embodiment of Scrooge during these festive Holidays!...more

Nora Ephron’s “I Remember...Nothing” Prompted Me to Remember

I just finished reading Nora Ephron’s “I Remember...Nothing”, and though I in every respect enjoyed the book, said to be “Breathlessly funny....” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, (and I agree because I did laugh at some points), I nonetheless poured tears throughout the book; I guess I found the hidden sadness. And much of how she viewed life, I found I can relate.I relate (from page 45, My Aruba) to having spent the entire work-day smiling with spinach on my teeth and no-one, not my so-called workmates, had the decency to point it out....more
