I Don't Like My Son Very Much Right Now

I’m going to be honest with you guys. I’m really tired of my son. The level of disrespect and general level of unhappiness is becoming so distressing that I’m barely functioning as his mother. I don’t want to be around him. I don’t want to do anything for him....more

Letting My Son Buy -- and Wear -- a Skirt

He saw it immediately, didn't want to look at or consider any other options. I could tell from the grin on his face that this was The Skirt. We swiftly made the purchase and were almost to the car before he started clamoring, "Come on! Let's get it on! I want my skirt!" So in the parking lot of Target, I taught him that putting on a skirt is exactly like putting on shorts: one leg, then the other leg, and up. He patted the purple layers with affection and told me, "I have a skirt."...more

The 'Dark Knight' Shooting in Colorado and the Danger of Assumptions

Last night, a gunman killed 12 people at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, just outside of Denver. When a tragedy like this happens, it’s human nature to try to make sense of it and place blame. ...more

Weighting around

Yet again, I find myself home when I really should have gone to the gym. It's yoga for God's sake. I love yoga and I'm always happy after I go to a class. I'm not sure what's going on with me about working out. I was doing really well for like, 2 months but now I'm slacking. Today the excuse was: I don't really like that class. The instructor isn't interesting or challenging and last time I went there were only two of us in there. Also, if I don't go to yoga, I will stay home and write something....more

Oh no - it's July 2nd.  Didn't I say not too long ago that I was going to be focused in July?  Crud.  July is here.  I guess I haven't really done anything too wrong, but I did ingest an ice cream sandwich moments ago AND some chocolate earlier.  I did not exercise this weekend, nor anything of real substance today, though I did go to a Zumba class....more

Dear Anonymous, This is Why Blogging Matters

To the anonymous commenter - it was just a little comment that you left on my Dear Overwhelmed Mom post - that post where I wrote about my overwhelming day and then share what I did during those moments of overwhelm. You left a comment that I felt did little to edify, encourage, understand, or even open discussion. "But I see you found time to blog." The nature of your comment undermines blogging. ...more

Double Jump Ropes

This morning I received a text message at 5:15 in the morning.  My alarm was set for 6:15.  The night had already been a lousy one with waking kids here and there and the text at five fifteen was far too early for me.However, it was a person I know who was asking if I was going swimming.  It's a person who wants to exercise, has a crazy work schedule and doesn't feel comfortable going to the gym or pool by herself.  It's a person who is reaching out so of course I texted back and said the plans were to go to the gym instead....more
