Raising a Son: I Don't "Get" Boys

Raising a son: It's very different from raising a daughter. Not in some ways, but in others -- it's a completely different experience. I'm not talking just about pointing the peepee down when changing diapers (a lesson I sincerely wish someone had mentioned before I went through a week of leaking diapers; postpartum, with no sleep, it took a ridiculously long time for me to clue in). I'm not even talking about learning all of the names of farm equipment and construction vehicles, or understanding why fire engines and trash trucks are so fascinating. I'm talking about the deeper things. I'm talking about masculinity....more
I raised five sons, and then came granddaughters--lots of them. I found the girls an eye-opener. ... more

Why Should I Keep Blogging with Low Stats?

Midway through last week I decided to stop blogging. I wasn't having a great day to begin with, and my mood went immediately downhill when I read "Parenting Blog Analytics: How Do My Stats Compare" at PhD in Parenting. It turns out that my stats don't compare terribly favorably, and I let that kick me right in the pants. In a bad way. I was ready to pack it in, buy a pickup and take it down to LA. ...more

I Just Want to Go on a Walk

It's hard to explain it to men. "Those guys are assholes," they say. "I'm not like that." That's the thing: walking down the street, I don’t know what you're like. My experience is the only evidence I have and this evidence says waiting around to find out usually results in unpleasant situations. No person in their right mind would seek out unpleasant situations. ...more

We move through our time on this earth doing a million and ten things, with a thousand and one goals, and tens of hundreds of to-do lists. And often -– in the cosmic humor that surrounds us –- we raise amazing people, make things better, touch people in amazing ways but don’t know, or never see. ...more

All Frugal People Are Poor

In the Mirror

Two similar quotes have been on my mind for the past month, and today it seems to be particularly relevant given this weekend's shooting of Congresswoman Giffords, Judge Roll and others who were participating in a very American activity--a political meet-and-greet."The world is a looking glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face." Thackeray. "The world is a mirror. The faults you see in others are your own." Baal Shem Tov.  ...more
