Am I the Only Mom Who Wishes for a Best Friend?

My negative thoughts as a result were things like, "I have no friends," and "No one cares about my life," and "I wish my sister lived closer because she is the only one that gets me." But, I find myself feeling lonely. And sad. Moms need friends too, right? Or am I the only one? I have always been a people person. I have always had "an easy time making friends" as my Mom would say to me all the time growing up. But, here I am. 35-years-old. 3 kids. A good husband. A stable life. And, all I want is a close friend. ...more

5 Parenting Vows I'm Sticking To After Watching HBO's "Girls"

I'm transfixed by Lena Dunham and her friends on HBO's Girls. These self-absorbed, generally very unlikeable, and deeply flawed girls captivate me. However, as a feminist, as a GenX-er, as a woman whose twenties aren't in that distant in the past, I mostly want to scream at each of the girls,"What are you thinking?" 'Girls' courtesy of HBO ...more

The Man I Know

Last Wednesday night, in a debate watched by nearly 70 million people, America and the world got to see the Mitt Romney I’ve known for most of my life. The guy who is in control, the guy who knows the answers to the hard questions, the guy who cares about people and wants to help those who need it the most. That’s the Mitt I know. I couldn’t have been more proud, and I couldn’t be more confident that he will be the next President of the United States. ...more

How Far Would You Go to Protect Your Child? Would You Kill Someone?

I try to avoid the news. Okay, not all the news -- just the news that talks about cannibals eating someone’s face off or something along those lines. I mean, dear Lord, is it really necessary to run a headline on that story and then put a warning about graphic photos? Does the world really need to see graphic photos of a man whose face was eaten off by a cannibal? I’m going to go out on a limb and say…no. I did, however, break my no-sensational-story rule when I saw the headline, “Texas dad beats 4-year-old daughter's alleged attacker to death” in the Los Angeles Times....more

I Don't Like Spanking My Kids, But I Do It Anyway

I was spanked as a child. I wasn’t beaten, I wasn’t thrown around. I was laid over my fathers knee and would get a couple of good wallops. It wasn’t done excessively, only on an as-needed basis. For me, that “as-needed” would come around much more often than it would my sister. One of the small burdens of being too much like my mother. The point is, I wasn’t traumatized. I didn’t feel abused. I felt as though I deserved it and, looking back as an adult -- I did. I don’t like spanking my kids. In fact, I usually give them numerous chances and warnings to straighten out the problem before I do....more
