In Work/Life Balance, Where Is the Balance Between Parents and Non-Parents?

This past February, my furnace went kaput. One day, it was a nice 68 degrees—downright tropical during the winter's Polar Vortex. The next day, I could have sworn I saw my breath. After a few moments of panic and mentally preparing myself to freeze to death in my sleep—alone, childless, forever single—I was able to do the adult thing and schedule a repair. Someone would be headed to my home the following afternoon. I paused briefly upon realizing that I'd need to be home in the middle of the workday … but this was an emergency. ...more

The Truth About Getting Pregnant Over 40

What to expect when you’re expecting when the miracle doesn’t happenThe age at which a woman becomes unable to conceive varies from person to person. We’re born with a finite number of eggs (about 200,000), and as the quantity diminishes every month, so too does the quality. They break down and start looking old, just like the soft skin around our eyes....more

5 Awful Things That Happened to my Daughters in Summer Camp

I did something that totally pissed my kids off. I sent them to summer sports camp so I could work and try to make money to pay for their braces and college. That's right, I'm an asshole. After camp, when I got to the front of the pick-up line in my minivan, a 20-year-old counselor-in-training with crack-dilated eyes and green paint on his face dashed to my car, yanked my sliding door open and yelled, "Happy Leprechaun day! Who's your camper? WHO'S YOUR CAMPER???!" ...more

Surviving the Self-Sacrifice of Breastfeeding

We all know that nursing a baby can be difficult. Perfecting the latch and figuring out how to hold the baby and making sure you're eating and drinking enough and on and on and on. I think once the technical "stuff" of breastfeeding gets figured out, there's a sort of zen period. And then... at least for me, I started to wonder, "So, when do I get some time to myself again?" That touched out feeling would wash over me, and I'd start to feel grumpy about nursing sessions. I thought it was just me. Maybe not! ...more
