Male CEO Steps Down Because Men Care About Their Families Too

Upon reading that Max Schireson, CEO of MongoDB stepped down to "spend more time with his kids," I sent my husband a text message at work. "Question," was how I started off. You know, that one thing that men always want to hear from their female partners. "Sup," he succinctly replied. "Have you ever been asked how you manage your career as a firefighter with your family life?" I tried to imagine the look on his face, but he immediately started typing his reply. ...more

The Good Old Days of Blogging: What Has Changed in the Last 10 Years?

Back when I started blogging, you had to write your posts uphill... both ways. We didn't have these newfangled social media sites. If you wanted someone to read your post, you stood on a wooden fruit crate on the street corner and shouted, "click me!" And we liked it that way. We were happy. What stands out for YOU in the last 10 years? Share your ideas as part of BlogHer's 10th Anniversary Selfiebration! ...more

'Girls' Is Back and Defining the Nature of Female Friendship

Girls is back. Now in its 3rd season, the show continues to explore the friendships between four 20-something women living in New York City. Now Hannah, played by Lena Dunham, is in a committed relationship with her on off again boyfriend, Adam, played by Adam Driver. The last time we saw her in season two, she was suffering a mental breakdown about to be saved by her ex-boyfriend who ran shirtless through the streets of Brooklyn to be by her side.  All it took was one phone call and he came. ...more

Snow Day Busy-Work Required When School Is Canceled: Who Benefits and Who Falls Behind?

The call came during my first sip of coffee this morning. No school. Snow day. Most kids rejoice, but my oldest son frowned big. "But I want to learn!" I started spouting off all of the fun things the two brothers could do and get into today, knowing full well the wrench it threw into my own day. Promises of making a snowman, mugs of hot chocolate, and a snowball fight worked a little bit to turn his frown upside down. Then his face lit up. "Does this mean we get to do our Blizzard Bag today?" It was my turn to frown. ...more

10 Bloggers Respond to Mrs. Hall's Letter with Thoughts on Slut-Shaming, Respect, and Selfies

As a mom of two boys, I have high hopes of teaching them many important lessons. Things like compassion and acceptance, the importance of education and hard work, the benefit of a leap of faith versus never trying due to fear of failure, and of course, respect. Respect remains one of those Big Things in our home -- for all people, in all ways, both physically and emotionally. You don't get to be a jerk just because you think you can, neither do you get to put your hands on someone else. As such, my gut-reaction to the now viral letter that Mrs. Hall wrote to teenage girls posting "seductive" selfies on Instagram and thus tempting her precious sons... well... I'm having a hard time with the general concept. ...more
