You can lead a child to naptime but you can't make them sleep

On Sunday, my littlest one (now 16 months) woke up from a nice long nap, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I kissed his sweet cheeks, admired his new haircut (his first!) and thought about how amazing it is that this little guy has finally decided to start napping at home. But I admit, it took me breaking a few of my own rules in order to get this to happen…....more
@edavis Yes, I admit I love sleeping next to him. Thanks for the comment and reassurance :)more

Being a Mom of Two Boys: What Did I Expect?

There are some things about being a mom of two boys that, frankly, are not quite like I expected them to be. Then there are other things that are exactly as I imagined they would be, which I always find gratifying. Then, there are those things that blow me away because they’re way better than I could have ever imagined, which I find humbling. Here’s a quick look at what I mean:Things that are not as I expected them to be:...more

Camping with Little Kids: We're Proof it Can Be Done

Last weekend, our family of four finally did it: we went tent camping. We packed a ton of stuff (download our camping list here or at www.TheIntrospectiveMom.com), including two Coleman chairs. Later, I realized that neither my husband nor I sat in those chairs once. I don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard at what is supposed to be a relaxing activity....more
@edavis That is actually exactly what we did! We went as a "test," just to see how it would go, ...more

What's cooking: How we do dinner at our house

Last night, I had to work late, which meant that my husband had to pick up the boys from day care, grab something for dinner and put them to bed without me. When I need to work late, I always miss seeing the boys, but there’s one thing that I definitely don’t miss: cooking dinner....more

Learning Life Lessons, Cape or No Cape

Late last night, I made my three-and-a-half-year-old son a cape out of orange felt, with the first letter of his name emblazoned on the back. I made it for two reasons: 1) lately, he has really been into superheroes and 2) he had a “rainbow parade” at school, and his class was assigned the color orange – he was asked to proudly wear orange-colored clothes and orange accessories. For my son, an orange cape seemed like the perfect thing....more

Upholding a Vow: For better, for worse

My last blog post was about treasuring each and every day with my children. My vow was to live in the here-and-now, if you will. However, I should have added that every so often, when you have small children, it is best to enjoy the here-and-now while also enjoying a small shot of bourbon.I say this because the day after I made my vow, the weather was dark and gray, and my children, husband and I were forced to stay indoors. Almost all day. Trapped inside. With all of that pent up energy and frustration that I somehow couldn’t channel into anything constructive....more

My birthday wish: to embrace, enjoy the here-and-now

As you may already know, I celebrated a birthday this week. It was a wonderful birthday, and the highlight had to be when my husband and oldest son (3 ½) presented me with a cake and card. My son was so excited, although I think it had less to do with me and more to do with the cake itself, which came complete with Oreo cookies on top, his favorite....more

Our Home: Messy and Marvelous, It's a Place Where Love Lives

There’s a mountain of clean laundry on the couch that I haven’t been able to fold yet, and there’s another pile of dirty laundry in the utility room that’s screaming to be washed. I just didn’t have time to tend to the laundry after work today, because the boys and I stopped at a park on the way home from school. Now, the boys are in bed, and I really should tackle those clothes. But I’m not going to worry about it tonight. All of those clothes will still be there tomorrow....more
