"Fat" Ballerinas & The Black Swan Diet: Don't Let The Times Set the Tone

He seems to think his hands are tied, it's just the way ballet is, it's not his fault Ringer doesn't look the way he wants her to. Okay, Macaulay. You're right. Ballerinas should be skeletal or their art is not worth watching. And basketball players have to be eight feet tall and writers should be old white men and musicians should never, ever be deaf. Poor Macaulay, you see, he's just doing his job. ...more

When A Passionate Encounter Goes Horribly Wrong

Her wet hair clung to her body, and her wet body pulled the sheets along with it as the two of them collapsed on the mattress, soaking it through. And then a pause. A pause? Yes, a pause. Pause as in: what now? It was like watching something on Netflix, and just when you're getting into it, that dreaded word: buffering. A bad case of life imitating... art? This is her sex life, one tired (and tragic) cliche. It happens to the best of us. ...more

Cancer Snobbery

I want to share with you part of a conversation I have quite regularly. It usually begins when someone says to me, "Did you hear, such-and-such has cancer. Isn't it terrible?" and I might say something like,"I heard. Did you know I had cancer?" "Oh really? When was that?" "In July 2003." "Oh my God. Are you all right now?" "Yes, thanks, I am." "Did you have treatment?" "Chemotherapy and radiotherapy." "Wow, and you have how many children?" "Four." "Oh, that's awful. I can't believe it." And then, the inevitable. "And which breast was it in? Did you have to have a mastectomy?...more

And most importantly, do the friendships we start online translate into friendships offline when you finally meet face-to-face: and if they don't, is it a "real" friendship? ...more

Yelling is abuse. Period.

She was never hit, but that didn't make it any less terrifying. Having someone screaming at the top of their lungs as they slam things, punch holes in walls, kick inanimate objects, stalk around in angry circles -- and having this happen on a daily basis, many times more than once in a day, is frightening. And, as she finally realized, it is abuse. ...more
