I Miss My Grandmother

Just a few weeks ago, I got an odd phone call. “Who is dis?” an older woman asked me. “You called me,” I responded, laughing. “Oh, dear, dear. I was tryin’ to reach my daughter. I tink I have the wrong number. I am very sorry. Please forgive me.” Now I could hear a Caribbean lilt. “That’s OK,” I told her, softening. “You have a good day, you hear? Take care.” ...more

BlogHer '14 Closing Keynote: Meet Us at the Intersection of Race, Gender, Feminism & the Internet

For many years we've programmed conversations at BlogHer conferences that talk about leveraging our online platforms for good. Those conversations are designed to be equal measures inspiration and instigation. This year, in fact, we have an amazing break-out panel scheduled entitled Going Beyond "Armchair Activism." Because there are certainly those who think conversations on the web and "hashtag activism" don't really effect change....more

The Family Vacation We Almost Canceled Was the One We Needed the Most

Last June, my dad's youngest brother hatched a grand plan. The three brothers and their families hadn't vacationed together in quite some time. My husband, two sons, parents, brother, and sister-in-law perfected the multi-generational vacation over the years, and as my uncle got to witness it in person for three days last year, he decided 2014 would be the perfect year to really put the multi in multi-generational. We booked two houses as soon as we could, and we began planning out the most epic of vacations. We all happily looked forward to June 21 when we would begin a week of pure relaxation and family togetherness. Then my beloved grandmother, my father and uncles' mother, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014. ...more

Life In L.A.: Celebrities Are No Big Deal, Unless We're Talking Nicolas Cage

When you live in Los Angeles, you run into celebrities all the time. Of course, your definition of “celebrity” may differ from mine. The first month I was there, I saw the woman who’d played Mrs. Godsey on "The Waltons." She was in line at the post office. I ran back to work, beside myself. “I just saw Mrs. Godsey!” I screeched at everyone....more

My Memories of Traveling While Black

As a child, we had very interesting travel arrangements. In the 1970s and 80s our family—from mixed race parents—would travel separately at times. We either went down South to visit my father's side of the family in New Orleans, or we drove up North to South Dakota to visit my mother's family. There were summers where my older sister and I would drive the 13 hours from Chicago with our father and stay with his sister for what seemed to be an eternity. Having grown up in a diverse area of Chicago made our visits there seem pointed. ...more

A Promise for More Fun: My Contract With My Kids for The Summer

Today is the last day of school for my not-so-little-anymore turkeys. I always have mixed emotions about it. As a work-at-home mom, I look forward to not setting the alarm clock every day or checking homework or worrying about library books, gym shoes, and piecing together lunches each day. ...more
