How to Keep it Together When Your Child is in a Mental Health Crisis

I cried far too much today. I cried because I have a sweet little ten-year-old boy who needs me to be a lot stronger than I am. I cried because I can't seem to give him what he needs, get him what he needs. I cried because he told us he's sad all the time, he can't make his brain shut off, he feels weird and out of place in this world, and he wishes he could be more like his brothers. I cried harder still when he saw me crying and reassured me that he was going to get better. ...more

Snow White and the Huntsman Promises Fierce, Sexy Examination of Female Power

I've waited months for Snow White and the Huntsman to open, and finally on Friday it's time to find out who is the fairest of them all. I'm excited because the extended release trailer shows a rich visual landscape worthy of escape. I don't know about you, but I am ready for a summer flick that sucks me into an alternate universe full of action, adventure and fantasy. ...more

Teaching Kids About Safety: Sometimes It's the Stranger Who's in Danger

True: We may have been a smidge on the antisocial side when we stepped into the elevator that day. It had been a long afternoon. We didn’t say hello or ask how you were doing or pass out party favors and ask for song requests. We just settled our collective gaze on the floor. It didn’t occur to me that maybe you were waiting for me to say something. But I did pick up on your hostility when I sensed your head turn and aim right at our little three-person huddle. Not a quick gander, mind you. I don’t like being stared at. Moreover, it ain’t cool to stare at my offspring. So you were already giving me the heebies before you piped up with this: “HELLO to you, too. YEAH, I get it. Strangers are DANGER, right? Especially with ‘kids’ around.”...more

Taquitos!

This is the dish my kids request the most when they come home or I go and visit them. Turkey Taquitos is as much looked forward to as Thanksgiving dinner. You can make this from leftover roast chicken, rotisserie chicken, leftover turkey or from boiled chicken. In this recipe, I use leftover turkey. To accompany the taquitos, I make Salsa Serrano....more

Dear Daughter

"You know spies; they're a bunch of bitchy little girls." -- Burn Notice Dear Daughter: You should know that you are hated. I'm not sure why they hate you. You didn't do anything to them. You don your princess crown, take up your sword, and pretend at Pokemon. You read your books and you learn how to draw comics and dragons and you play piano and practice kung fu. You delight in pretty dresses and weaponry. You love me when I nurture you as a mom, train with you as a warrior, and play video games and card games with you. ...more

Madonna and My Wake-Up Call about The Double Standard In Aging

[Editor's note: Madonna's performance at the Super Bowl generated a lot of heat. And not all of it positive. Isn't she way too old to be dancing around like that on stage? How embarrassing! Yet as far as aging goes, what's forbidden or frowned upon for women of a certain age is often considered perfectly acceptable or even to be applauded in men. Deborah Shane realized this after seeing the reaction to the Material Girl's performance and blogged about it on Toolbox.--Mona] ...more
