The Narnia Moment I Have Been Waiting For

My little Bean is old enough to want to read The Chronicles of Narnia out loud with me, and I am beside myself with joy. I grew up in a Narnia-loving family. When my husband-to-be met my parents for the first time, we sat at a coffee shop so they could get to know him, and one of the first questions they asked him was, "So, what are your thoughts on Narnia?" Then literally, they both had their elbows resting on the table, their chins resting on their knuckles, leaning forward, gazing into his eyes to hear his breathless answer. ...more

BlogHer '12 Interviews: Why Did You Start Blogging?

As we continue to speed toward BlogHer '12 in New York City this early August, I wanted to ask a question I ask almost every blogger I meet -- whether at a conference or a meetup or a one-on-one or eventually by individual email. It's the question that, really, leads us all to BlogHer.com and the annual conference in the first place: Why did you start blogging? Why do you keep blogging?...more

Bagel, Lox, Goat Cheese, and Roasted Vegetables

Giving birth is not a picnic, but it has its rewards. I didn't have cravings while pregnant, but just after bringing my daughter into the world, I wanted to celebrate with bagel, lox and cream cheese, from Beauties, of course. It's hard to improve on perfection, but tempting to come up with a new variation on the theme....more

Arugula Radicchio Goat Cheese and Pear Salad - Treat Yourself!

Have you ever stolen public property? My dad always told me that even if it's just a paper clip, if it doesn't belong to you, it's stealing. While I do feel guilty, my sorry habit doesn't come close to Winona Ryder's. So maybe there's stealing, and there's stealing?...more

Arugula Salad with Roasted Beets, Fresh Mint, Blue Cheese & Pecans

Travel. I’ve been traveling for the past week-and-a-half. Not for pleasure. But for work. Which means that I’ve eaten a lot of airplane food. And mediocre room service. And cold pizza in conference rooms. I arrived home in San Francisco exhausted, and really craving something fresh, light, and healthy. Not to mention delicious. ...more

Lentil Cranberry Wrap - I'd serve to Adele!

This Lentil Cranberry Wrap recipe came to me in a flash just as my yoga teacher Mona Keddy was explaining the dedication of our yoga practice. Somehow, just sitting in the Shri Yoga studio gives me clarity of thought and focus that I don't seem to achieve elsewhere. Is it a magical place?...more

Holly's Halishkas: New Age Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

I've been waiting patiently for one of my posted dishes to fill the house with the irresistible home cooking aroma of my youth. Ah, I've arrived. These are amongst the best halishkas I've ever tasted. I would proudly serve them at a dinner party. I sampled one as soon as I removed the casserole from the oven...just to check for doneness and desirability. Then another...just because....more
