Keep Your Friends: Six Tips for Talking Politics Without a Fight

It's campaign season again in America, that wonderful time when the people with whom you get along three out of every four years suddenly chafe you raw with their dinner conversation, their retweets and their Facebook status updates. I myself am among the annoying: I fly my liberal flag pretty much all the time, but I get worse when the rest of the country starts talking issues, too. And I really don't want to lose my friends over our differences of opinion. (Even though I'm right and they're wrong.) ...more

One "Slut" Does Not a "War on Women" Make

Enough is enough.I expect it from the pundits who bash Republicans for ratings, but when Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz lays all the blame of the recent political garbage at the feet of Republicans, calling it a "war on women" -- I'm gonna call shenanigans.Since when did Rush Limbaugh take the place of God and savior?...more

My Friends Think I'm the Only Liberal They Know. I Don't Know What I Am.

I'm pro guns (legally, in the right hands), but I’m pro birth control. I’m not for using guns as birth control, unless of course you count shooting the testicles off a child molester. All for that. I’m a feminist, who right now happens to be a misplaced stay at home mom, trying not to go crazy while her kid is in school full time. And soon I’ll be trying not to go crazy when my kid is out of school full time for the summer....more

Rolling Stone, The Anoka-Hennepin Suicide Cluster & "No Homo Promo"

I saw a tweet this morning with a Rolling Stone article about the "No Homo Promo" policy in the Anoka-Hennepin school district in Minnesota and its suicide cluster. I clicked on it and found my eyes dashing down to the page count, because even though it was really long, I knew I was going to read the entire thing. ...more

"Real Women Have Curves" and Other Ways You're Not Helping

Posting a picture of Sophia Loren or Christina Hendricks on your Facebook as if it were some sort of radical, daring alternative to opressive patriarchal beauty standards is foolish at best, and harmful at worst. Seeing these kinds of images doesn't make me feel good, it makes me feel like being a womanly, curvaceous Venus is the only alternative I have to being super-skinny. The reality is that I, like many women, am neither very skinny nor lush and voluptuous. I have fat on my thighs and small boobs. I am imperfect. Where do I fit into this dichotomy? ...more

I'm Not Black. Why Do You Care?

Racial identity is a personal issue that is currently hot topic within the Latino and African-American (Black, depends on with whom one is speaking and how he or she chooses to identify) communities. PBS aired a popular documentary called "Black in Latin America" which explores the "influence of African descent on Latin America". There is tension among Latinos and African-Americans....more
