My Dog Babies

My youngest son is preparing to go away to college in August, and while I am freaking out, part of me knows I will be primarily okay because I have two dog babies to waddle away my time during my newfound free schedule. Many people shudder when you talk about your animals like children, but the fact of the matter is, THEY ARE CHILDREN! I always say my pooches are from my dog-womb. As the main care-taker in this house - NO ONE ELSE LIFTS A FINGER TO TAK CARE OF THE DOGS UNLESS PAID - I feel quite motherly toward my 15 year old pit-bull and 7 year old Shih tzu....more

A Friend In Need Is A Terrible Thing To Have

Sometimes when you meet someone who has somehow impacted your life, it is a meet and greet with a few emails - or an actual paper-envelope-stamped mailed card during the holidays. Very rarely does it evolve into a deep, heart-felt friendship. How do I know, well, it is not like I have actually met a lot of people who have impacted my life, but the few I have - Mike Ditka, Karen Calabrese, Stella Foster, Joanne Bamberger, Barack Obama - are not my " buddies"....more

When The Chicks Come Home To Roost

Coming home after years of being away ... the title a tad deceiving because in this case, my son coming home is NOT a bad thing. Having my oldest come back home to regroup is a smart move right now, and I applaud it. He is 19. He is my adventurous one. My one that was never settled. Never easy to comfort. Never could sit still. Was often sickly and allergic and slightly ADD. He is returning from Seattle where he lived with my boys' dad. I know it is just until he gets a better employment opportunity. Hopefully he will enroll in school....more

This time last week I was fresh off my flight via JFK and boarding the subway en route to BlogHer 2012 ~ NYC. It was my first visit to NYC. It took BlogHer to bring me there, and I have family in Manhattan! All I could say the entire trip was "WOW"! From the amazing men and women who convened, the awesome luncheons, guests, speakers, exhibitors, to the incredible town - I was in awe! Being a Chicagoan, I never felt the need to jump into the ultimate urban setting. Chicago has it all, but in comparison, NYC has this serious energy that no place I have ever visited has displayed! ...more

Spring Into Sexual Health

Learning about your sexuality as a young woman is always perplexing. During my teen years, we were in an era of discretion, prissiness, and feminine mystique. There was no erotica, pleasure information or candid talks.Women gave their teen girls a "package" upon their pubescent transitioning. It contained these HUGE, horrific HORSE pads that you had to pin into your underwear. I recall staring blankly, as I pulled out pamphlets that had archaic illustrations. VERY overwhelming for someone who really had no pubic hairs yet....more

Things to Think About Before Going Vegan

There are quite a few things one should consider before becoming a vegan. After strongly investigating vegan menus and recipes, you will find that veganism really promotes the spice of life. It is not an easy road by any means, but it may encourage you to live vibrantly and with a new purpose!I have not reached the veteran stage of vegan lifestyle yet, but I will share what I have learned....more

Getting to know you before, during, and after BlogHer 09

Hey Denise and fellow Blogher gals!  A native Chicagoan, born and raised, this will be my first Blogher Conference! I am a civil servant closing in on my 20th year in local government. I started my blog two years ago and it saved my life. The drudgery of a day job such as mine zapped the life and creativity from my bones. While I love what I do, the nature of law enforcement can make even the happiest person question humanity! ...more
