Should You Use Typepad for Your New Blog?

When I started blogging in 2004, Blogger and Typepad were the major blogging platforms out there, and if you were really trying to prove yourself, you used custom templates on Typepad....more

Do You Admit That You Have a Blog?

I'm a social person. I can easily speak to total strangers, and in class I ALWAYS have a question. However, one topic seldom comes up in real life: my blog. I'll share things on Facebook, where I have friends both from school and from the blogosphere, but other than that it's almost a don't ask, don't tell type of thing. I don't like to mix my online and offline worlds. And I become uncomfortable when other people mix them for me. ...more

6 Twitter Fails You May Be Making

Some people love Twitter, and others just don't get it and quit before they ever gave the site a real chance. I fall into the first group — it's my favorite social media site. Looking through some of the tweets that go out on a daily basis, I think I understand why so many give up. They don't understand how to Tweet effectively in order to turn it into a useful tool. If you're using Twitter for your business or to promote your blog, I invite you to take a look at how you're using it on a daily basis in case you're making some of these very common mistakes. ...more

5 Important (but Random) Lessons Teens Need to Know

You thought you had a lot of lessons to teach your toddler? Well, I hate to break it to you, but potty training and spoon feeding are only messy in the literal terms when it comes to the lessons you will have to teach your teens and tweens. Most of our kids' friends are pretty smart and self-sufficient, but every now and then we'll talk about something and they have no idea how they would solve the issue. ...more

It's Not Your Kids That Make You Time-Starved: It's Your Spouse

So much for you and your marriage partner working together to share the burdens of family life, regardless of who does what or how much. Turns out that it's actually married moms who are feeling the stress and pull of time starvation the most, not single moms, according to a new survey about the growing segment of "breadwinner moms" around the world, released yesterday by global communications firm Ketchum, in partnership with BlogHer. ...more

Will Ello Kill Facebook, or Is It Just a Lot of Hype?

I joined Ello because everyone else was joining Ello. (And yes, if all the kids jumped off the bridge, I would jump off the bridge, too!) And now we're all milling about at Ello, and it feels like the awkward start of a party. You know what I'm talking about? That moment when you first get there, when the hostess is still running around, cleaning up by tucking her clothes underneath her blanket. It's that moment before all the other people arrive, and you're just sort of standing about, making small talk with people while you wait for everything to... begin. Except... what if this is it? What if this is Ello? What if this social media party turns out to be a dud because the hosts didn't count on the mass Exodus from Facebook this week when Facebook stuck to their "you need to use your real name" guns that brought everyone over Ello's threshold? Or what if it turns into a social media revolution that forces the larger sites to change the way they interact with users? ...more

Taking It Too Far: Back Off the Girls in Prom Dresses

Last weekend, my best friend and I sat blissfully on a restaurant patio in seventy-degree springtime hoping a waiter or waitress might bring us drinks. While we waited, a group of high school kids dressed for prom started to make their way into the restaurant through the revolving door. One girl got her full princess dress stuck in the door, and my friend and I started talking about how much that must suck, hopefully it didn't leave a mark, how embarrassing, la la la. Then we heard the loud and inebriated ladies to our left commenting on the girls themselves after the kids had barely cleared earshot. ...more
