Health care reform from a military wife's perspective

I’m a military wife in favor of a healthcare reform. I’m comfortable with the long reaching arm of Uncle Sam not only because of my roots in the land of love, pasta and universal health coverage - Italy - but because for the past ten years I’ve been a beneficiary of Tricare, the military’s government sponsored healthcare program. ...more

Do you carry a weapon: mace, pepper spray, something else?

A couple of days ago I wrote a post about women and self defense.  Though I don't carry a weapon I have thought about it, especially in the bad old days of New York's worst crime years.  I've carried mace and at one time pepper spray, but never a gun or knife or anything like that. I was always afraid someone would take the weapon from me and use it against me.  I've seriously thought about buying a gun during a period of time when I felt especially fearful of crime, but I never got one.

Of Google, Glenn Beck and Van Jones

Let me start by saying that Glenn Beck drives me bananas. Just the sight of him makes me fly into the kind of rage I usually reserve for Joy Behar and people who wear leggings without an appropriately long shirt (they aren't pants. LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS). In fact, I often find myself, when I am at home, alone with a television and an individually-sized Jose Curevo bottled margarita, cursing his very existence and the negative contribution he makes to an already intellectually adrift party. And he needs a new wardrobe. ...more

Is Cash for Clunkers a "Clunker?"

It seemed like a good idea: the Cash Allowance Rebate System (CARS, a.k.a. "Cash for Clunkers") a program aimed at saving the environment by creating a taxpayer-funded program in which people traded in their "clunkers," or perfectly drivable cars with 18 mpg or less into dealerships in exchange for rebates up to $4,500 towards a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. The program was so successful, it blew through its $1 billion dollar funding in a mere seven days, mostly because people like the appearance of free money. ...more

Science Medley: Now with more (hope for) diversity in science

It's once again time for me to cast some link-love in the direction of the scientific bloghersphere. Science bloggers have been writing again about (the lack of widespread) diversity in science--and the popular perception that all scientists (and particularly science professors) are white men. Instead of providing you with my own disquisition on the subject, I'm going to provide an annotated list of some of the best recent posts I've found on the subject. ...more

This is a great post.  Thank you for providing your insight to this manner and bringing these ... more

How to Regroup the Right?

The next two months will decide the fate of the conservative movement, and also, the Republican party, which is currently suffering from a personality disorder. If I had to give an answer right now as to whether or not I think the conservative ascension to its former prominence is a guarantee, I must honestly answer: I don't know. If I had to make a guesstimate based upon the past several weeks, I'd lean towards no. It's a reason why I'm careful in separating the titles "conservative movement" and Republican party: they are not the same. ...more

Are you drinking enough water?

We all know how important drinking enough water is to maintaining our optimum health. But it's another one of those things that even though we know, we forget. It’s amazing how easy it is to get busy with our work, and totally forget that we haven’t had a glass of water all day. More than likely, even if you drink water, you're not drinking enough. ...more

Live-Blogging Hillary Clinton's Speech with Fellow Bloggers!

I had planned on being at the Democratic National Convention this week with my fellow MOMocrats and the lovely Queen of Spain. But as I'm sure many of you can relate to, some family issues prevented me from making the trip. But as you also can probably guess, that doesn't mean PunditMom isn't going to be covering the convention! ...more
