The Perfect Harmony of the 'Mad Men' Finale

The Mad Men finale felt absolutely perfect to me: uneven, repetitive, gorgeous, tedious, predictable, rich, rewarding, infuriating, full of visual puzzles and Easter eggs (or more specifically, Halloween pumpkins), and buoyed by exquisitely-crafted narrative. Most importantly, it was true to the universe of characters it has given us.  It even ended with a sickly sweet, iconic commercial that evoked both nostalgia and revulsion at the same time. Perfectly Mad Men. ...more

THE WINDOW WAS MY ONLY WAY OUT

Brenda Coffee@1010ParkPlacehttp://www.1010parkplace.comFueled by an endless supply of cocaine and vodka, my first husband fired a bullet through a closed door, into the room where I was standing. My response was immediate. Instinctual. No time to plan my jump from the second story window. I shoved it open and leapt into the night, hoping the tree outside would break my fall. ...more

Do You Discuss the Dangers of Drug Abuse with Your Kids?

I’ve always known that I grew up sheltered. I was raised in the South, in a church-going family (Baptist, naturally), with loving parents and protective siblings and friends whose idea of peer pressure was to make sure I called my mom before I stayed out too late.It was Mayfield, of Leave it to Beaver fame. It was Mayberry.I liked it there. I wanted to raise my kids there. Mayberry is the perfect town. There’s nothing to lead a young child astray. There are no scary things there. No crimes, no criminals. There are no drugs in Mayberry....more

The Shame of Addiction: Are Parents to Blame for Their Kids' Addiction?

My brother is a heroin addict. I am not ashamed of this. I do not hide from it and I speak openly about it. I write a different blog that talks about the effects his addiction has on my life, my husband’s life, and my family’s life. Even though I speak about his addiction, many do not. Many people are ashamed of the addict in their family. Many people hide the fact that addiction has affected them in some way. I don’t. I am not ashamed. I did nothing to make my brother an addict. My parents did nothing to make him an addict. He choose his path and we pay....more

10 Things Not to Say When A Child Has A Mental Illness

My 12-year-old son lives with mental illness. His first diagnoses, ADHD, came at the age of five. Subsequent diagnoses have since followed, beginning at age nine, when he was treated via outpatient hospitalization for five weeks for depression and mood instability. I openly discuss and write about our experiences as we've traveled this journey. All in the hopes that more people will be educated about mental health, and less will continue to stigmatize it. ...more
