Just Say No: School Pictures Edition

This year, I didn't pre-purchase school pictures. You know the ones. The ones where the photographer says, "Say CHEESE!" and your kid gets a goofy fake grin showing both rows of teeth all the way back to where the wisdom teeth will come in? The ones you have to pay for BEFORE you buy? The cheapest package was $30 or $40. You can get them retaken, but it's a pain. And really -- for three kids' poorly taken pics that we don't even want to give to their own grandparents? I said no....more

I Called The Cops on My Son

It probably sounds strange that I don’t regret calling the cops on my son, but I don’t. I really don’t. It needed to happen. We called his bluff. It’s been building for years. He doesn’t give a damn about school. He stays in bed watching TV all day. He refuses to get a job. He refuses to do homework. Weeks ago, I decided to have the “birds and bees” conversation with my son. Seeing that I had his complete attention, and thinking that this may be my only chance to get some real facts in, I began telling him about the 1% factor in birth control and that abstinence is the only 100% method. I explained that even though 1% is an extremely low percentage, it is a fact that should not be ignored; especially since, he too, falls in the 1% equation.
