10 Essential Blogging Tools You Need Right Now

Let's be real here for a second: in the time since I started blogging many years ago, I've had several blog identity crises (as my roommate calls it). I've changed blog names, made new ones, changed my layout three times in one week... You get the idea. But one of the great things that has come out of all that change? I've found a ton of really great resources for blogging! So as I was reading this post from Rachel, I realized how great an idea it would be to share some of those tools with you guys. ...more

Does My Husband Have to Spend Mother's Day With His Mother?

Dear TMH, Mother's Day is coming up, which would be wonderful in theory. A day to sleep in and be treated like royalty, right? However, my MIL lives nearby, and that raises some issues. Am I obligated to spend the day with her? She seems to expect us to do something with her, and I don't really want to do that.  My husband is caught in the middle, because he wants to make us both happy. But hasn't she had her share of Mother's Days?Help!Signed,It's MY Day, Dammit...more

When Getting Burned Out Is a Good Thing

As strong, driven women who are bold enough to step into leadership roles, we work our butts off to succeed. But as time goes by, we often fear that if we pause, we’ll fall asleep at the wheel. Unfortunately, this attitude can cause you to miss out on the opportunity to live a truly incredible life. Rather than running from feelings of burnout, you should follow them....more

I Was Racially Profiled and This is What I Did

This morning, after I dropped the girls off at school, I donned my mom uniform (jeans, t-shirt, flip-flops, purse and sunglasses) and went out to run some errands. I needed to get them done and get home before noon because this weekend has the potential to be just ridiculously crazy-busy. I need to get prepared. So, off I went.       ...more

What's the Ideal Length of a Tweet? Shorter Than You Thought.

Buffer posted a roundup of the ideal length of anything you may write online: from headlines to blog posts.  Ideal length of a tweet? 100 characters. I know -- they want you to waste the other 40?  You can take those words over to Facebook where the ideal length is only 40 characters.  Luckily, the ideal blog post can take up to 7 minutes to read.  Wheeeeew, at least I can be wordy over in my personal space. ...more

How to Teach Your Child to Love Healthy Food

At family gatherings, we have one who rushes around and acts busy, hoping nobody will notice she's not eating. (Pssst, we all notice.) We have another who won't touch a carbohydrate. We can't get through a photo album without hearing, "I was so fat then." On more than one occasion, I was assured that my baby daughter would "grow into herself." Soon after she started walking, I started to hear, "oh good, she's trimming down." Um, I wasn't worried. When it comes to shaping my kids' attitudes toward food, I have my work cut out for me. ...more

The Finale of Groundbreaking Show The Fosters: Brilliant Casting!

From 1998 to 2002, a TV series called Any Day Now captured my devoted attention. It starred Annie Potts as Mary Elizabeth (M.E.) Sims and Lorraine Toussant as Rene Jackson. The two grew up together in Birmingham, Alabama in the 1960's. Despite their difference in race and the upheavals and violence of the civil rights movement swirling all around them in Birmingham, they were best friends. I'm happy to see Potts and Toussant together again in The Fosters, which sees its season finale Aug. 5. ...more

How to Make Your Own Maternity Jeans

Almost two years ago, I broke the zipper on a pair of my jeans (I've never done this before or since, happily), and I thought, "WHAT could you possibly do with a pair of jeans with a broken zipper?" And then I remembered that I'd made myself a pair of maternity jeans once upon a time, and this pair might be a chance for me to do it again, now that I knew a little better what I was doing. So I stashed them away for many many months until I was pregnant again....more

Please Ask Before You Post Someone's Image on Facebook

Over the weekend, I posted about asking people not to post my child's picture on Facebook.  Carolyn Hax had given some pretty weak advice to a set of expectant parents that amounted to "your kid's picture is going to end up online anyway, so this isn't a battle worth having." ...more
