I am a Fat Runner

It is true. I am a fat runner. Or... I should be more specific. I am overweight. Significantly. As in, at only 5"3, I weigh in at 177 pounds.  There is no disputing my weight... or my body mass index or even my clothing size. Most of all, there is no disputing the impact that my weight has on my running. ...more

Yes, They're All My Kids

I know people mean well and are just curious but making flippant remarks about me "Sure having my hands full!" or saying "Better you than me!" or even asking highly personal questions about how my children were conceived, especially IN FRONT OF MY CHILDREN is not cool. They're getting older and they hear you. ...more

I'm Sick of Apologizing for My C-section

Did you know that April is Cesarean Awareness month? I didn’t. I didn’t even know such a thing existed. A little over two years ago I had a scheduled C-section. When I found out that my primary method of delivering Els was by C-section I was upset. I cried and felt like a failure. My body in my eyes was failing me and a C-section was the worst thing possible. I was naive and stupid for thinking that way. Now over two years later I blame the media and birth propaganda for making me feel like a failure and taking away some of the excitement of Els’ birth. ...more

Hillary Clinton's New Website: Sure Looks Presidential

Is she? Or isn't she? Hillary Clinton's new website, HillaryClintonOffice.com sure looks Presidential. The site, which was created on January 31 -- the day before she stepped down as Secretary of State -- doesn't mention "campaign", "2016" or "President", but look at the stately portrait of former First Lady and diplomat, and what comes to your mind? Dear Mitt Romney, Here's My 47% Story

In 2003, I was unexpectedly pregnant. But, oh, I was in love with my child. I began working at a low-paying job, at all kinds of stupid hours, so I could provide for my child, for myself. I did sign up for Medical Assistance through state assistance because my employer did not offer (affordable) insurance, but I didn't sign up for Food Stamps or Cash Assistance through the state of Pennsylvania because certain groups of people made that a shameful action. I believed I was stronger and better than people who needed such things. I was going to Make It in the world, without help, without assistance. Ah, how pride cometh before the fall. At 18 weeks pregnant, I was at work when I started to feel a little woozy. My back hurt horribly, and not in an "I'm Pregnant and Achy All Over Way." I wasn't even showing yet, so it wasn't even an "I Gained Too Much Weight Already And My Back Hurts." I knew it was different. I felt whiny, but I left work early, ate a sandwich, and took a nap in my modest, self-funded apartment. I woke up with a fever of 104. After calling my doctor, I went straight to the Emergency Room. ...more

Why the Unsupervised Playgroup at Central Park Is a Bad Idea

Lenore Skenazy is making headlines again Skenazye has launched an after school program where children ages 8-18 can be dropped off at Central Park to play with each other. The caveat is that they are under no supervision from an adult. Her premise seems to be that children need to engage in free play, playing outside and playing with other children....more

Not Stale: Women's Issues in the Presidential Campaign

It's bad enough when men assume women are single issue voters, but it's far, far worse when a fellow woman has decided that if I have a deal-breaker issue, I must be a zombie following 'rhetoric' spewed by a given political party....more

Stale 'War on Women' Rhetoric Underscores Tone-Deaf DNC

It's bad enough when men regard women as single-issue voters, but it's insulting when women buy into that brainless nonsense.Hence, the entire one-trick pony "war on women" of a Democratic National Convention agenda this week showcased a party bereft of fresh ideas for women, unless they happen to think of little more than their reproductive systems. No question that women's issues post-Roe v. Wade must and will always include concerns about reproductive health....more
