It's all about the theatre darling

This week had a theatrical bent.   Apart from the run of the mill theatrics of.. ...more

Billie Here

Hi, I noticed that there have been a couple of references to me in previous blogs.  So I just wanted to write something for myself.  I can use the internet, usually just for Christmas and Birthday shopping.  I am allowed free access to Natalie's Fly Buy's points and what a lot of fun I have with those. (Although you have been having to purchase replacement underwear and slippers with those points haven't you? ...more

A Big Week

It has been a fairly momentous week both internationally and domestically.  More than wine glass of wine gave it's life on Wednesday night when the results of the American election came through.  I was very happy when Barack Obama was announced at US President for another 4 years.  I know he hasn't got everything right, but he does appear to be a man of integrity and he does have the interests of all of the American populace at heart.  Which is more than I am prepared to say for the other guy....more

Happy Birthday Dad

Yesterday was my father's birthday.  69 years and 1 day ago a bonny baby boy was born in Whangarei Hospital.  He was the first son of Wilson Lloyd Caldwell McConnell (really where did these names come from) and Emma Marie McConnell (nee Harrsion)  Granny said she didn't get to see him for about 24 hours but she knew he was her baby because he was the best looking in the hospital (she would say things like that - so cute)...more

Love the Cake

Yesterday was Christmas Cake(s) Baking Day.  I have a wonderful recipe for a Dark Chocolate Christmas Cake.  Although it doesn't sound very traditional putting chocolate in a fruit cake trust me it is divine.  It is from the Australian Better Homes and Gardens magazine.  Want to make sure I give credit where credit is due...more

The end of your life book club

With my blog I am endeavouring to be disciplined enough to write one post a week.  Although discipline is not my middle name or even a word that finds itself in the Natty Top 100 word list.  So a couple of hours ago I sat in front of the computer and thunk and thunk about what I could write.  This was what I came up with...more

The week that was here in Auckland New Zealand

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about attending the funeral of my Great Uncle Doug.  This week there has been a wedding in the family to celebrate. My sister Julie and her awesome partner Vicky went to Hawaii for a holiday and managed to arrange a civil union while they were over there.  We are all very happy for them, and wish Mrs and Mrs McDag all the very best.  My biggest concern is that the paper work won't have been done correctly.  I mean look at all the problems Mr B Obama has had with his birth certificate....more

Doing without the booze

So here's the thing, I like drinking. Mostly wine but I am also partial to a gin and tonic or 2. I like drinking with my friends, I like drinking on my own. A holiday isn't a holiday without alcohol and nothing is better after a hard day at work than sharing a bottle of Sauignon Blanc (NZ of course) with my man. Bubbles is great for a celebration and what is a dinner with friends without a bottle or 2? But I have the tendency to binge drink. I drink a lot fast and I don't know when to stop....more

Book of the Week

I usually try and avoid autobiographies about miserable childhoods and abuse. I just find them too sad and upsetting. But I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed Janey Godley's Handstands in the Dark. It is her story do growing up in the 60's and 70's in Glasgow. She had alcoholic parents and an uncle who sexually abused her as a child. Later on she married into a gang family and dealt with all the resulting drama. But somehow she managed to retain a sense of humor, and stayed strong....more
