Top 13 Words to Stop Saying in 2013

After posting the Top 20 Words to Revive in 2013, Laura's hubbie got to thinking about words that should be buried and forgotten in 2013. (Okay, let's be honest, FOREVER.) Indulging the hubs, Laura presented 13 instead of 20 because...well, it was time to clean the kitchen:Irregardless...more

It's Time To Quit Smoking: Are E-Cigarettes the Answer?

A few weeks ago my daughter and I were at the mall doing some back-to-school shopping and walked by a kiosk selling what looked like cigarettes. We both thought it was odd, but we assumed it must be some type of "quit smoking" device. As we walked by I noticed a sign that claimed it was a "clean" way to smoke. At the time we just rolled our eyes at the ridiculousness of it all, and wondered why anyone would want to pay money for something that looked like a cigarette but wasn't? ...more
The smoking/no smoking debate that is ever present is interesting. I know people like to say it ... more

I Want My Daughter To Feel The Mean Girl Hurt

Last night as I was tucking my nine-year-old daughter into bed after a long day for both of us, she reached up put her arms around my neck and asked me to crawl into bed with her so we could snuggle and talk. When I crawled in next to her she snuggled as close as she possibly could and when she couldn’t get any closer she opened her eyes just long enough to get my attention and said, “Something happened at school today."...more

Music Tells Your Story

One of the things I probably identified the most with in Jen Lancaster's Here I Go Again were the discussions between Lissy and Brian about music. When you are teenager, few things feel bigger than the music you listen to in high school. It becomes the soundtrack for that part of your life, and you carry it with you going forward....more

Dear Feminists: I'm Already a Woman in Combat

As I watched the video of General Martin Demsey announcing his endorsement of women in combat, I waited. I waited for the backlash. The backlash from the misogynistic males who already have a problem with any woman being in the service, unless she works in administration or the chow hall. The backlash from the Bible thumpers pleading that we "think of the babies" and not place their mothers in harms way. But most of all, I waited for the feminists....more

Complexities of Coming Out: The Jodie Foster Edition

I remember the first time I said it. It was late on a Saturday night and I had just taken a shower and was staring at myself in the bathroom mirror and I said, "I am a lesbian." I had never been attracted to a woman and had never questioned my sexuality but then I was and I did and that's how I found myself looking into that mirror, alone with my realization. I spent a little time bargaining...maybe it was just this woman...maybe I was just lonely...maybe I was bored. ...more

Dear Lily on 'How I Met Your Mother' -- Yes, Motherhood Is Hard

Dear Lily, You've been on my mind and my heart since the latest episode of How I Met Your Mother aired. While I acknowledge that you are a fictional character, I have become attached to you and your friends over the years. I have laughed and cried with you for eight seasons now. But the other night, dear Lily, I cried for you. Because -- damn -- motherhood is hard, isn't it?...more

I Don't Care About Your Diet or Your Extra Five Pounds

It's that time of the year when everyone is abuzz with New Year's resolutions. They include "lose weight," "exercise more," "get healthy," and a million others in between. I'm not against resolutions, but what I do hate to see is an unrealistic attitude and approach on the losing weight one -- and the biggest offenders are women....more

I'm Doing the 52-Week Money Challenge!

Want a relatively painless way to save $1,378 dollars this year? Try taking the 52-Week Money Challenge, which is all the rage of the Internets this time of year. It's pretty simple. You start by moving over a buck in the first week and build up to $52 in the last week. Or, as BlogHer Books Contributing Editor Karen Ballum suggested, you could start with the $52 and work your way down to $1 during the expensive holiday season. I moved over $1 from our joint account to my business account yesterday. Shhh ... don't tell my husband....more

Four Web Design Trends for 2013

No matter how happy I am with my web and blog design, there is just something about the New Year that makes me want to jump in and re-vamp.
