Do You Want Guns in Schools? The NRA Does

After a week of what was thought to be respectful, even remorseful, silence on the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shootings, the NRA took to the podium this morning, with… shall we say, both barrels blazing. National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre addressed the media in Washington D.C. with the message that the only way to keep our children safe is to put armed security guards in schools....more

Put Your Kid On A Leash

Have you seen those kids in the mall or at the fair on a leash? It’s either on their wrist, or they use the backpack kind, which is supposedly more humane. I looked at those mothers and judged them. What kind of crappy parents need to put their kid on a leash? If your daughter is kicking and screaming in the middle of the grocery store, do the rest of us a favor and leave. Some of us have good kids that don’t act up in public. If your little darling doesn’t know how to behave, leave him home. I don’t want to listen to him whine....more

The Real Dangers of Co-Sleeping

Thank you for bearing with me for the past two weeks while we reset our life by three zip codes. I’m feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and we are now completely unpacked in the downstairs bathroom. And here I thought we’d be unpacking for months -- we’ll be living out of boxes for the next two years!...more

Dear Stranger, Hands Off!

Dear Person Touching My Baby, I know what you’re thinking, and I completely agree with you: She is adorable. It’s just that you are, well, you know, not. In fact, you’re covered in germs and all sorts of other things. God knows where your hands have been -- you did wash them last time you pooped, right?...more

Should Parents Be Arrested for Cheering During High School Graduation?

As usual I am taking the wrong stance. Well, I don’t think it is wrong but when media has decided to interview all the parents that are outraged that a South Carolina mom was arrested for cheering at a high school graduation, it makes you feel like you are wrong if you are on the other side. The media has a way of doing such little things like that but this piece/vent isn’t about the silly mainstream media. I have my own brain! I decide my stance! Here is the deal. I have had two children graduate from high school and one from college. We were blessed that at all three graduations parents/families/friends were fairly respectful of all the graduates. ...more

Stop Inviting My Kid to Church: Religion Is Not for Children

Recently, a few of Miss N's friends have been sincerely inviting her to church. This part will be touchy for people who do not believe the same as we do and I respect that; I'll raise my kids and you can raise yours. I do not think religion is for children. I think that they should be exposed to the beliefs of all people, and while I will tell my children "this is what Mommy and Daddy believe," I do not expect her to believe the same thing. I'll ask Miss N what she thinks -- and she has some really amazing thoughts on the matter -- but I will not tell her she is wrong if she disagrees with me about the big beliefs....more

SWAK: Do You Kiss Your Kids on the Lips?

There was a discussion on a forum awhile back about whether or not parents kiss their kids on the lips. I was shocked by how many mothers reacted in disgust saying things like, "No! My lips are for my husband only!" as if kissing on the lips was a purely romantic thing. But I got to thinking that if you weren't raised kissing your own parents on your lips, then you probably wouldn't do the same with your own kids. My first reaction was: Some parents don't kiss their kids on the lips? And the second one was: And some people romanticize the act of kissing to the point of exclusion?...more
I didn't when I was a child, and I probably won't when I have children. We usually kiss on the ... more

In Defense of Alicia Silverstone's Feeding Methods

Today's rant is about the video that circulating around about Alicia Silverstone feeding food to her son directly from her mouth. The general consensus out there from the media reports that I've read -- as well as comments from people in my twitter timeline -- is that she's insane and that feeding your child that way is gross. *BIG SIGH* Might I remind people that before blenders and jarred baby food, and most certainly back in the day and back home, mothers for generations upon generations, back to the dawn of man have been feeding their babies with pre-chewed food. ...more
