Ringless & Married: Quit Judging Me

I remember that I simply could not wait until I had a shiny diamond ring on my finger. I already had a baby in my belly and the admonishment of several family members and friends. Slapping a ring on my hand would legitimize our situation. It would legitimize the child growing within me. It would take some of the sting out of being an unwed mother. ...more

Women of Color: The Silent Victims of the Mommy Wars

Apparently, only white women get to argue about whether to stay home or seek employment out of the house. That’s the takeaway I got from the online vitriol sparked last week by Ann Romney and Hillary Rosen. It doesn’t matter whether it’s 2012, 1992, or 1972 — the Mommy Wars continue to pit white, privileged women against even more privileged white women. ...more

Spring Decor Trends 2012

Spring is in the air...I can just feel it! And bright colors are being seen all over the interior design and fashion world right now. And with this unseasonably warm winter the thought of cold weather makes me shudder. Cold weather is no longer welcome in my book:). I'm absolutely loving that the flowers are beginning to bloom, if they haven't bloomed already. The tulips, daffodils, azaleas, etc are creeping in....more

I'm Missing the Mommy Gene

When my son was born, I ran out and joined the first mom’s group that I could find. And then I promptly quit it. I was so looking forward to the companionship of other females, but what I found were these odd one-up-manship mommy power-hours, where women, clothed in vegan, organic cotton yoga ensembles sparred endlessly over any and all parenting-related topics. You use cloth diapers? Well we make our own cloth diapers from recycled nun’s habits. You make your own baby food? Well I nursed my first child until he left for college… for his master’s degree....more

I Gave My 8-Year-Old Son Permission to Run Away

"Nobody likes me in this family," Ryan ranted from his corner. And guess what, I don't like any of you back! I hate you all, even you!" Me? I sat on the edge of his bed. I took a breath. Not so easy to breathe frankly, when my child can yell at me and I yearn to yell back, to lapse into the equally childish. So before I could think of what to say, I said what I felt: "That's hurtful." My son's anger turned muted. Tearful. But he held his resolve. "I don't care! I'm running away! To California. The very farthest place on earth I can get from here." ...more

Don't Let Thrifting Become Expensive

[Editor's Note: I love thrifting, but I totally understand where Lakeitha is coming from with her warning -- it's so cheap, it's so pretty, but do you NEED it? Where's it going to go? Otherwise you might end up with a whole garage full of stuff -- check out Lakeitha's photos. -Rita] ...more
