I Yelled at a Stranger's Kid on Vacation

On the heels of Marcy's Diner owner Darla Neugebauer's outburst toward a toddler who had been crying for 40 minutes, I've been brought back to my own story of yelling at a stranger's child. However, when I went to link my story in a comment string, I was reminded that BlogHer editors took it upon themselves to replace the image of a child at a pool that I originally chose for my story. You see, I intentionally did not indicate the race of the child in my story....more

I Learned I Was Diabetic, and I Became a Binge Eater

Being at a healthy weight, no one really questioned my eating habits. I was the Sporty Spice of every group, so excessive eating was justified and even praised.  Through college I managed my healthy weight by keeping my routine of unwarranted eating and extreme exercise (my BMI was about 22). Luckily I love fruits and vegetables, but processed grains and starches were primary staples in my diet. (I couldn’t say no to a Pop-Tart.) ...more

Help! My Mother-in-Law Wants To Control Us With Her Money

Dear Mouthy Housewives, My mother-in-law uses money to control her kids. Until recently, she didn't really bother us with it. Last week she deposited money into our account after we explicitly told her we didn't need it. To be clear, we aren't wealthy by any means, but we work hard, budget and certainly don't need that type of drama in our lives. Short of hitting the ATM and throwing a wad of cash in her face (I do actually care about this woman), what can I do about this? I feel totally disrespected but also a little ridiculous for complaining about getting cash. Am I completely crazy? ...more

You Can Wear This: Rock a Leather Dress!

I've had this leather dress from H&M for a few seasons now, but I barely bring it out. So I decided to give it another debut this season. I wore this outfit to New York Fashion Week last September, but it could easily work now with some tights and a jacket, too! ...more
I love anything in leather or denim! So yes, I would definitely rock this dress. more

Why Yahoo Just Became Obsolete: CEO Marissa Mayer Bans Working from Home

Unless you've been living under a rock, if you're a parent you've probably heard the newest decree from Marissa Mayer -- the young CEO of Yahoo, who was hired when she was five months pregnant and notably took only a two-week maternity leave after popping out her baby, undoubtedly while being fanned by a her doula, a waiting nanny in tow. Her decree, uttered with all the certainty that an empress can have from her ivory citadel, was that no longer could Yahoo employees work remotely (aka from home, or anywhere else that's not the office) anymore....more

I Don't Work for Yahoo! Why Do I Care About Marissa Mayer's Policy?

I always know news has hit the mainstream when my mother asks me about it. Yesterday, she called me to ask how I felt about Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer's decision to ban telecommuting by June 2013, even for those who were hired in a city that doesn't have a Yahoo! office. The truth? I feel super invested in this policy -- something that doesn't affect my life at all -- and it's taken me a few days to figure out why....more

The Onion’s Racist Treatment of Quvenzhané Wallis at the 2013 Oscars

I love the Oscars. Every year, I sit down happily with wine and treats to watch the movies that I’ve been checking out and loving get nominated and honoured. This year, Les Miserables was my favourite, and I really highly enjoyed the performances by the cast and the speeches being made by everyone involved. Oscar Night didn’t disappoint in its general award-ceremony-ness -- but then it did....more
