Dinner Tonight: One-Pot Wonder Chicken Lo Mein

A couple of months ago I noticed a One-Pot Wonder Tomato Basil Pasta recipe all over Pinterest.  I tried it and liked it.  I think it’s interesting that you can simmer uncooked pasta, with some broth and veggies, and it will create an almost creamy sauce.  I decided to play around with this concept and I made a one-pot wonder version of chicken lo mein. ...more

6 Things to do with Pumpkins Besides Carving!

The other day I was thinking of some other things that I could do with pumpkins besides carve them, or just leave them there to look pretty. Since I'm not that good at carving.. the thing I made last year looked like a freaky clown... I really thought about using them in the way that I would use other things in my own home.. except just now let pumpkins do that work!So here is what I came up with--you can personalize any of what I've shown below to suit your own style and decor!  Have fun and make this a family project!...more

Why I Won't Throw My Kid a Pinterest Birthday Party

I have a confession to make. My son just turned 6 this week. And... I dropped the ball, so to speak, on planning a big basketball birthday party like he had originally asked for. There are so many moms out there who are far more creative than me. It's easy to look at Pinterest (like this boy's basketball party, which is awesome) and think that I'm failing when it comes to throwing my children cool birthday parties. ...more

Valentine's Day Lunch Boxes: Love Sandwiches, Cheddar Cheese Hearts, and More

Editor’s note: I’m inspired nearly every time that I look at the blog Another Lunch. Unlike me, Melissa is full of creative, delicious ways to put together her kids’ lunches. But even she outdid herself with her Valentine’s Day lunch boxes, with love sandwiches, cheddar hearts, and even stamping a love note inside her son’s fruit leather. Show your kids a little extra love on Thursday.--Jane ...more

Unpretentiousil: The Cure for the Modern Hipster

I remember wearing my Kansas City Royals t-shirt unironically in New York City a few years ago and being stopped three times on the street by people telling me it was hilarious. I know the team sucks, but I live in Kansas City. That was the beginning of my hipster hatred. Seriously, people, what's so wrong with sincere enthusiasm for things that aren't cool? And I grew up on Natty Light in Iowa. It's GROSS. Thank God there's finally a cure for the modern hipster....more

Kitchen Tip: Baked Hard-Cooked Eggs

Here’s a handy step by step on how to bake hard-cooked eggs in the oven. The results? Simpler, easier-to-peel (hooray! this is my least favorite part!) and softer texture (the whites aren’t rubbery). You can make as many dozen at a time as you have muffin pans. Amazing. Preheat oven to 325. Place a dozen eggs into a standard 12-count muffin pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes. ...more

Valentine’s Day Peekaboo Pound Cake

Editor’s note: How awesome would it be if your kids sliced open a pound cake to reveal a pink heart inside. Well, Amy from Very Culinary has figured out a way to do do just that. Even though this recipe is super-easy, Amy warns that it is a daylong project, so don’t wait until the last minute to make it. --Jane ...more

Game Day: It's All About the Food

We all know the feeling of anticipation surrounding game day, hopeful that our team will win!  There is also nothing like sharing that feeling of anticipation with others, putting out your best high fives, slaps on the back, punches in the air, and jumps on the couch.  I believe there are three essentials to pulling off a successful game day gathering: good drinks, an abundance of food, and comfortable seating.  While other hosting elements such as décor and lighting may take a back seat during a game day party, food and drinks take center stage.  Here are some of my aw...more
