Hello! I'm thrilled to be here. I'm the author of one novel, The Bone Weaver, and editor of five anthologies. The newest is Exit Laughing: How Humor Takes the Sting Out of Death, and it came out this week! You might ask if there's anything funny about death. Let me ask you this: Have you ever been to a funeral, wake, or memorial service where you've heard laughter, or you've laughed, when stories about the deceased are told? In this collection, 24 authors reveal how humor and death DO go together! Malachy McCourt tells us what really happened to Angela's ashes, and Jacquelyn Mitchard shares the story of how, after her husband's wake, three of his best friends end up in security lock-up at a mental institution.
Another exciting project started with my first anthology, The Other Woman. I took five of the essays and wove them into a play, which will be developed by The Berkeley Repertory Theatre and produced in February 2013. I teach Personal Essay in the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program---all my courses are taught online---and I love the process of working with students from all over the world and sharing in their joy of writing.
I live in San Francisco and am so excited about this upcoming book tour. In addition to the Bay Area, I'll be reading with many of the book's contributors in New York and Los Angeles.
