A bit of sporty and family D.I.Y.

Let me just start off this post by saying that Will and I are not your typical D.I.Y. couple.  We're so not into spending our weekends tiling and re-tiling floors, putting up wallpaper and restoring old furniture.  It's just not our thing.  But, since moving to a new neighbourhood in September 2012, I've really been itching to put our personal stamp on our home.  You know?  Make it more "us"....more

2013 Running Goals: Progress Update

Can you believe that it's already middle-March?!  A quarter of 2013 is almost behind us!  Seeing that I've set myself exactly four running related goals for the year, I thought that this would be the ideal time to give you an update on how things are going:...more
@JennaHatfield That's SO exciting - good luck with your first half!!  Sounds like your training ...more

Pressing Pause

On Tuesday evenings I have a standing date with the pause button.  While Will takes over Baby Girl's bath- and bedtime duties (only this once during the week), I grab my towel and head to the gym for a pilates class. ...more

I'm really not a fan of long runs.  Which, come to think of it, is quite odd coming from a long distance runner, right?  Perhaps I should rephrase: I'm not a fan of long, slow training runs.  Longish races I love - there's nothing like the feeling of accomplishment after crossing the finish line of a half marathon or a marathon.  Or give me hill repeats and fartlek sessions any day - I love how they leave you exhausted, yet satisfied in such a short period of time....more

How to rekindle your love for running

Let's face it: Even the nuttiest of running nuts sometimes don't feel like going for a run.  And while feeling blah for a day or two can be pretty normal, having those days turn into weeks can be a bit more tricky to snap out of.  I hit a pretty bad running slump late last year (which I've thankfully now left behind!) and I thought I'd share with you what pulled me through:...more

The Vortex

Mother Nature has conspired against me.  She's placed the mother of all obstacles right at the hurting end of my favourite neighbourhood running loop - the proverbial thorn in my side.  I call it The Vortex.  ...more
@Darcie  Thanks for the motivation, Darcie!  I'll show that hill who's boss - no matter how long ...more

In memory of Burry Stander

South Africa's heart is aching.  My heart is aching.  On Thursday afternoon, 3 January 2013, Burry Stander, South African mountain biking icon, was killed in a hit and run incident in Shelly Beach, South Africa.  He was only 25 years old....more

2013 Running Goals

In 2011 and 2012 I selected a word for the year instead of making new year's resolutions - a motto of sorts to guide the way in which I wanted (and needed!) to grow.  I must admit that to this day I'm not a huge fan of new year's resolutions - I'm from the school of thought that believes that if you want change bad enough, you should take action and make it happen then and there.  No use in procrastinating until the beginning of a new week/month/year....more
@Karen Ballum Thanks, Karen!more

Wow, what a year 2012 has been!  My word for the year was choose - which basically boiled down to focusing on choosing actions and words carefully in order to get a desired outcome.  In many instances my mantra was a resounding success, but - sadly - in others not so much....more

Around the pool in 24 breaks

It happens every, single year.  Wait, let me re-phrase that: I let it happen every, single year.  I go for my first swim of the season when summer is already halfway over.  And I always regret it.  Note to self: Start swimming when summer starts!  It's glooorious!...more
