The Family that Vlogs Together...

This past weekend, I flew down to Tampa to visit my siblings! We took a road trip from Tampa to Florida, stopping for breakfast and lunch in Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale. It was a great way to escape the declining temperature of New York. They definitely don't call it the Sunshine State for nothing. The temperature there was in the mid-80s! Jealous, my Tri-State area brethren?...more

Sandy Hook: When Are We Going to Protect Our Children and Act on Gun Control?

I’m going to talk about the epidemic of gun violence in this country and my outrage as a parent. So if you're going to protest "it's too soon" or "it's inappropriate now" or that it's "offensive," you can just move on. If you’re going to tell me that semi-automatic rifles and Glocks are not the problem, that guns don’t kill people, people do, save your breath. ...more

What Percent of Your Work Day is Spent Dealing with Email?

Email. It's a blessing ... and a curse. Many of us spend a significant portion of our day managing work email. Writing it, reading it, flagging it and putting it into folders has become an action item for many that was not even part of the work landscape a few decades ago. And sometimes (shudder) it even follows us home and comes after us with its plaintive little beeping voice late at night or on the weekends....more

Finding Beauty In Self-Care

As I grow older and busier, I realized that I tend to prioritize obligations so much that I forget about myself. I skip lunch because I want to finish up an assignment. I eschew a fun board game night or table tennis meet-up because I think I should be taking pictures of products. I bought a bento cookbook, an introduction guide to calligraphy, and printed out Japanese hiragana and katakana lists to refamiliarize myself with the language, but I haven't touched a single one....more

Gift Card Scam at the Checkout Line: Check Your Receipts!

The commercials are out, the stores are decorated and we are starting to be reminded well that the holidays are quickly approaching. Holiday baking, decorating, gift buying –- it is all coming! As we start planning holiday shopping, I feel compelled to share with you one of my experiences from last year. This is not an internet forward or something I overheard in the grocery store, but this holiday shopping scam happened directly to me .... ...more

Chic and Simple Holiday Home Decor

I was excited when I was asked to be a part of BlogHer's Getting Noticed This Holiday editorial series. I wasn't sure what I wanted to write about. Then, I realized that what gets me noticed are my outside-the-box Christmas touches, ideas that require very little money, but make me smile, and inspire others. ...more

Put Your Kid On A Leash

Have you seen those kids in the mall or at the fair on a leash? It’s either on their wrist, or they use the backpack kind, which is supposedly more humane. I looked at those mothers and judged them. What kind of crappy parents need to put their kid on a leash? If your daughter is kicking and screaming in the middle of the grocery store, do the rest of us a favor and leave. Some of us have good kids that don’t act up in public. If your little darling doesn’t know how to behave, leave him home. I don’t want to listen to him whine....more

How Far Would You Go to Protect Your Child? Would You Kill Someone?

I try to avoid the news. Okay, not all the news -- just the news that talks about cannibals eating someone’s face off or something along those lines. I mean, dear Lord, is it really necessary to run a headline on that story and then put a warning about graphic photos? Does the world really need to see graphic photos of a man whose face was eaten off by a cannibal? I’m going to go out on a limb and say…no. I did, however, break my no-sensational-story rule when I saw the headline, “Texas dad beats 4-year-old daughter's alleged attacker to death” in the Los Angeles Times....more

I Suck at Daily Morning Writing Exercises

When I mention Julia Cameron or The Artist's Way, chances are one of the first things you will think of is morning pages. When I signed up for the My Artist's Way Toolkit, I was a bit hesitant. I knew that morning pages were part of the bargain, and I've never been good at them. After a few weeks of using the service I can tell you that I still suck at morning pages. ...more
