One Time, I Made My Daughter Cry...

I'm not naive enough to believe that just because my child is seven, she can't be disappointed and hurt. The Nutcracker isn't a little recital piece. It's not a school show. It's serious production and a Big Damn Deal, and I had serious reservations that my sweet SG would have a spot after eight ballet lessons -- six of which happened three months before her audition. But she wanted to try and I wasn't going to stop her. I prepped her as best I could. ...more
Such a great story.  Love this.  My daughter is 4 and LOVES ballet, but I'm subconsciously ... more

My Football Fever Is Contagious

I am about to utter words that I never thought would leave my mouth or be tapped by my fingers.  Words that when put together once invoked nausea.  Words that my husband probably prayed for BEFORE his own health.  The words: I LOVE FOOTBALL.  That’s it, everyone, hell has officially frozen over.  Global warming will soon come to a close. ...more

Band-Aids Be Gone

My daughter is obsessed with boo boos, Band-Aids and stickers.  Anything with an adhesive backing is as good as gold to her.  I’m afraid if I give her a roll of tape, she might tape her eyelid shut.  I’m afraid if I give her a post-it, she’ll be the girl who pastes it to her forehead.   ...more
@Denise Thanks for the tip!  I'll go with Target and the Boo Boo Buddy.  That's 18 more years ... more

How to be an Irresistible Blogger

And let's face it, sometimes life gets so busy we just do a "mark all as read" move and start from scratch. Except that I never really do that. I mean, I do it to MOST of my reader, but there are some blogs, that no matter HOW late to the party I am, I will read every.single. word. What is it about those blogs that keeps me from just skipping some posts in an effort to catch up? Why am I so drawn to those particular spaces? ...more

Drop the Jokes: Let's Be Happy for Snooki and Her Baby

Snooki had a baby. The Internet has been on fire for nine-ish months. There have been jokes and monologues and e-cards and memes and more jokes about Snooki having a baby. At first I laughed about it -- just like everyone else. I mean, she is so easy to look down on, right? There are hours and hours of footage of her being ridiculous on TV. And sure, she placed herself in the position by signing on to do a reality show. I get that. But it must really suck to have your pregnancy laughed at. That must hurt....more

The Kindergarten Cut-Off Dilemma

I’ve been running around the last few weeks buying school supplies for The Big One to start 3rd grade at the end of the summer. I’m a bargain hunter (never pay retail!), so I’ve been buying a little here and a little there, whenever I find a good deal. And every so often, as I’m getting him ready for school, I realize that The Little One could have been starting kindergarten in the fall too. Maybe. See, try as I might to get him born earlier, he was evicted born 13 days after the cut off date. 13 stinking days....more

Sharing and Processing Grief with Children

We've had a lot of loss in our family and friend circle since 2010. Our sons have been to too many funerals; I have been to too many funerals. I am always amazed at what questions our older son asks and how he processes his grief. Sometimes, I'd like to be a kid again. Katie at Marriage Confessions recently lost her father, and as she watched her son process the loss of his grandfather, she was moved. I think you will be too. ...more
