I'm Tired of Having Less Money than Other Families!

Dear Mouthy Housewives, Spring break is coming up and it seems that all of my daughter's friends are heading to exotic destinations -- Colorado for skiing or the Caribbean -- and we will be stuck at home. My kid (10) doesn't seem to mind, but for me, it's a sore subject. I'm tired of feeling like her classmates' parents can always afford to do more than we do, and it makes me feel like we shouldn't be at a school like that (that we otherwise love), and it also makes me dread spring break. I don't want my kid to feel like she always has less....more

Holiday Alternatives to Material Gifts

Like many Americans, I am not swimming in extra cash this holiday season. Though I look forward to merry making with loved ones, I dread the money-sucking traditions of the holidays. How can I avoid the buying? And if I must make a purchase, how I can put some deeper meaning behind the gift? My goal this season is to aim high, buy low....more

Confessions of a Thank You Note Writer

Are hand-written notes a thing of the past now that we have email and texts? Is it the end of an era for human communication? How will historians put all the puzzle pieces together if the servers go down? Thus, a fan of letters writes a fan letter:...more

School Happens: Other Homeschool Moms Make Me Feel Bad

Here's the thing: I read other homeschool blogs and moms are smiling as they let their children lead the way through the grace of an "unschooled" environment. Johnny is off writing his own book about rocket science and Mary is learning to be a fashion designer as she sews her life away. They don't need math or regular structured learning because they're so damn smart already that books are pretty much a waste of time. That's so NOT what things look like here. I wonder, am I alone in this?...more

She Who Had No Idea

She probably didn't mean to come across as ignorant and ironic.  There was no question, though, that she had an intent. The woman was a fellow federal worker, and we were sitting across from each other for a meeting earlier this week. As the small group of us sat around waiting for the others, we made introductions and small talk. ...more

Hey Momtographers! Just Take That Photo!

"Tommy! Look at mommy's camera and smile! No, Tommy, look here. At the lens. Right HERE. TOMMY! TOOOOOOMMMMMMMMY!" I know you've said it. I've said. I said it yesterday. But Veronica Armstrong wants you to stop interfering in your kids lives and just take the picture. Really. You get better results that way -- and I remember that only after I realize I sound like a moron trying to get my youngest to look at the camera. Go take a look at her beautiful photos if you need proof. ...more

Chincoteague, Virginia: Summers of Sand and Horses

Four or five times every summer, we bypass the closer beaches of Ocean City, Bethany, and Rehoboth and head out through the farmland and poultry processing centers to reach Chincoteague, a beach town built adjacent to Assateague Island.  Every horse-loving child knows Chincoteague as the setting for the Misty series, and yes, the Beebe ranch is still there as are all the wild ponies which are still rounded up every July and roam free around Assateague all year round. ...more
