Air Force to Single Mom: Get Married, Give Up Your Baby or Get Out!

Pregnancy discrimination is illegal, right? You can't be fired or denied a job just because you're expecting, right? I mean, it's 2012, right? Wrong, as Rebecca Edmonds has found out after being dismissed from the Air Force for getting pregnant. While single. Apparently that's "forbidden" in the Air Force. Edmonds is understandably upset and fighting her case....more

October: Breast Cancer Awareness Scam Month

The people who are not aware of breast cancer are our most vulnerable populations: poor, uneducated women who don't speak English. Who is pouring money into getting out into underserved neighborhoods with culturally, linguistically, and reading-level appropriate materials to let ignored populations of women know about their risk? I can barely summon the strength to get into the stupidity of raising awareness for breast cancer, getting women free mammograms because they have no health insurance, and then not having any comprehensive program in place to help them when these same women find out they have breast cancer. Raising awareness is not useful if we aren't also going to do actual, concrete things that save women's lives when they discover that they have it. ...more

This Mom Declares “STRIKE” For Thanksgiving Dinner!

This mother does hereby revolt from assembling this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. I am not fixing my “usual” fancy fare; of mashed potatoes n’ gravy, or boned puff-pastry turkey, or creamed onions and green-bean casserole, or sweet potatoes and biscuits. No, I will not be talked out of my decision. So don’t pout or cry, don’t beg or threaten, and, certainly, don’t try to strike a bargain with me! For thirty years I have given my best and slaved in the kitchen, putting together all the fixings for a delicious and proper Thanksgiving meal....more

The Myth of the Boogey Man: Arresting Mom for Unsupervised Play

Tammy Cooper is just like me; she lives on a quiet cul-de-sac and she lets her children ride their scooters along the neighborhood street. The only difference between this Mom and me is she was arrested for allowing her kids, ages six and nine, to play outside watching from “only a few feet away.” All it took was the judgment of one neighbor and a phone call to the police that has turned Tammy’s life upside down. ...more

Tantrums & Grief in the Grocery: More Than Meets the Eye

I don't realize my son is tense, bothered, quiet. I don't realize it until later, after the urge to strangle him had subsided. One of the special racks, at the end of the fourth or fifth aisle, is stacked with boxes of muesli bars. "Can we get some of these please Mum?" I barely even glance at him. "We can, but not from here. When we get around to where they usually are, where there's lots of them to choose from, we'll get them then." Those of you who spend time in the company of small children know how this next bit goes. Small child begins to whinge, their drawn out pleas often mixed with exaggerated sobs in the back of their throat. ...more
