We ARE Pregnant: Why Mila Kunis Is Wrong

When Mila Kunis made her rant about men with pregnant mates saying “we are pregnant,” I heard a collective cheer from mothers and mothers-to-be from every end of the universe. And while I understand the difference between being pregnant and being WITH someone who is pregnant, I have to say that I don’t agree. Many men and wives of doting husbands would beg to differ as well. ...more

Why I Buy (Many) Organic Foods

The other week I read a post on BlogHer called The Cult of Organics. Although I consider myself a moderate voice when it comes to food politics and beliefs, I still took umbrage with it. ...more

Beyond the Irrational Fears of Pregnancy: What If It Happens Again?

As any pregnant woman will tell you, a lot of the crappy part of pregnancy is the worrying. There are the major worries of course, which I don't even need to mention because honestly, if you haven't thought of them yet I don't want to remind you about them. There are also the "I read too much of the baby book and now anything can happen" worries. You freak out over deli-meat and soft cheeses, and whether all the wine you drank before you found out you were pregnant is going to mean low SAT scores for your baby genius....more

Call to Moms: Make an Effort with Your Appearance

I love everything about being a mom except the lack of time I have for myself! There have been countless books, stories, blogs, etc. in regards to this topic, but I want to share all the little details that most of us mommies don't discuss. Like the other day, I went shopping for some quick groceries for dinner and didn't take enough time to look in the mirror. Had I done so, I would have realized that I had finger paint in my hair and on my face....more

Pregnancy Feels Different This Time

I am now officially telling people I am pregnant, instead of just declining a glass of wine while they smile at me knowingly. This means people like to ask me the hard pregnancy questions like, "Is it a boy or girl?" and "Is it just like last time?"...more

How Come I'm the Only One Who Kept My Maiden Name?

My name is Christie O’Brien Tate. It's the name I’ve had all my life.  It will always be my name, even though I'm married with two children, and I'm the only one in my household with the last name Tate.  For as long as I can remember, I planned to keep my maiden name.  Long before I read the work of Betty Friedan or Catharine MacKinnon, I knew I wanted my name to stay with me. Sometimes when people ask me why I kept my maiden name, I joke that I'm horrible with paperwork, so there's no way I was going to schlep down to the DMV to update my driver’s license. ...more

Air Force to Single Mom: Get Married, Give Up Your Baby or Get Out!

Pregnancy discrimination is illegal, right? You can't be fired or denied a job just because you're expecting, right? I mean, it's 2012, right? Wrong, as Rebecca Edmonds has found out after being dismissed from the Air Force for getting pregnant. While single. Apparently that's "forbidden" in the Air Force. Edmonds is understandably upset and fighting her case....more
