As we've been saying in our partnership with Public Radio International: Women's lives are newsworthy. But what exactly does it mean to be newsworthy, and how do news stories get told? ...more

When Dads Care for Babies, Their Brains Actually Change

The deeper I get into mothers' rights work, the more often I end up thinking about men and fathers. While there is no dispute that women, even now, do much more of the caregiving and homemaking than men, men's lives have changed both at home and at work as a result of women's leaps in education and employment outside the home. Changes in the activity of one gender are necessarily going to be felt, one way or another, by the other....more

Are Bloggers Only Writing for Other Bloggers?

If I post every day, do things on my blog change? If I post every day, do my numbers grow? By numbers we are talking engagement, followers, comments, and that ultimate Blogger-Heaven of Good Pagehits. Bloggers (including me) are trying to answer these questions for themselves during a time when we can find a lot of support from a community where others are also striving towards the same goals. We all hold hands and jump off the blogger-edge together. Thelma & Louise style. Sorta. Yet we are 10 days in to NaBloPoMo (give or take), and I find myself asking a BIGGER question: As bloggers, are we only talking to ourselves? ...more

An Anonymous Letter Told Me My Friend Is a Rapist

I used to own a bookstore in a small New England town. For me, it was the stuff of dreams: Business was good, the setting idyllic, the work minimal and the regular customers just odd enough to make things interesting....more

US Airways' Social Media Team Had a VERY Bad Day

US Airways committed the blunder of all Twitter blunders today, when someone on its social media team tweeted something inappropriate. I don't even know if I can tell you what it was, because my mother-in-law tells me not to share anything on the Internet that I wouldn't tell my grandma. And I simply cannot imagine telling my grandmother that US Airways tweeted a photo of a model airplane in a vagina....more

Gluten-Free Baking: Carrot Cake Bread Pudding Muffins

As the name suggests,  Carrot Cake Bread Pudding Muffins are the wonderful combination of carrot cake and bread pudding into adorable petite treats. To make the bread pudding, gluten-free bread cubes and grated carrots are first tossed with a spiced milk and egg mixture before being baked into golden, irresistible bread pudding muffins. Luckily, there’s no need to wait for the muffins to cool, just pop ’em out of the pan right away out and smother in the delectable lemon cream cheese glaze.  ...more

I Did Nothing While She Hurled Abuses At Them

I imagined her saying I don't need your help. Truth be told, I didn't have anything to help her with other than maybe talking to her kids while she zoned out for a while. My daughter and I got on the bus, our first day of catching it together. Our first day of her getting off and transferring to another to go to school; me staying on to get on the subway, me staying on to watch her walk to a bus stop that leaves a lot to be desired as far as safety. Please pay attention to your surroundings. Please. ...more

Texas, Tampons and Tears: Sister Supplies

[Editor's Note 7/18/13 10:37 a.m.: Texas Governor Rick Perry signed into law sweeping restrictions on abortion that were being protested at the statehouse earlier this month. --Grace] The social media reaction to the Texas State Legislature banning state residents from bringing tampons or pads into the General Assembly buildings during a heated debate on abortion last week really got me thinking. On its face, this is patently absurd – have you ever tried to throw a tampon at anyone? Or a pad? Even drenched in water, they weigh next to nothing – it's like throwing a wet tissue. How much damage can you do? And when you are talking about standing/sitting on a balcony – it's like throwing confetti. From your vagina. I guess....more
