Romney Dances Away from Obama Jabs in Final Debate

Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama walked into Monday's debate with one goal: to pursuade undecideds. For Romney, he needed to avoid being too aggressive and maintain momentum and for Obama, he needed to come on strong and pick up steam. It's a crucial time for both campaigns....more

The Day You Left Me

Most of all, thank you for leaving me the blanket for when I curl up on the couch to sleep tonight, my laptop at my side, a pile of books at hands’ reach -- the way you first found me, only so much more. You leave me as more, not less, because of your refusal to let me leave that first time I tried -- the second and third, so long ago now -- when I was terrified of closeness. You taught me that closeness was possible. You taught the wildfire the beauty of a hearth. And maybe I'm not meant to be a hearth, but now I know what it means to be a safe place even as I rush across Sepulveda Pass. ...more

Mitt Is Not Moderate, But He Does Say Things Like "Binders Full of Women"

I was waiting to see who would show up at tonight’s town hall at Hofstra University. Would it be the suddenly “Moderate Mitt” of the last presidential debate? Or would it be “Extreme Mitt,” the self-described “severely conservative” governor we’d come to know during the endless debates of the primary? The suspense was practically killing me. ...more

Stop Inviting My Kid to Church: Religion Is Not for Children

Recently, a few of Miss N's friends have been sincerely inviting her to church. This part will be touchy for people who do not believe the same as we do and I respect that; I'll raise my kids and you can raise yours. I do not think religion is for children. I think that they should be exposed to the beliefs of all people, and while I will tell my children "this is what Mommy and Daddy believe," I do not expect her to believe the same thing. I'll ask Miss N what she thinks -- and she has some really amazing thoughts on the matter -- but I will not tell her she is wrong if she disagrees with me about the big beliefs....more

The Myth of the Boogey Man: Arresting Mom for Unsupervised Play

Tammy Cooper is just like me; she lives on a quiet cul-de-sac and she lets her children ride their scooters along the neighborhood street. The only difference between this Mom and me is she was arrested for allowing her kids, ages six and nine, to play outside watching from “only a few feet away.” All it took was the judgment of one neighbor and a phone call to the police that has turned Tammy’s life upside down. ...more

Dear Stranger, Hands Off!

Dear Person Touching My Baby, I know what you’re thinking, and I completely agree with you: She is adorable. It’s just that you are, well, you know, not. In fact, you’re covered in germs and all sorts of other things. God knows where your hands have been -- you did wash them last time you pooped, right?...more

I Found Love Online and You Can Too

When deciding to find a date online, safety is first and foremost. There are a lot of whackos out there but on the flip side, there are a lot of good people that are serious about wanting to meet someone. Use your common sense at all times. Most on-line sites won't allow you to post contact information. You must go through their site to contact a person. Don't give out any personal information until you are sure you are ready to talk in person. ...more

Thrill in the 'Ville: Martha Raddatz Referees Biden and Ryan

Vice Presidential candidate debates are rarely considered important, but in a race still too close to call, Paul D. Ryan and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. took the stage with the potential to take the election for their respective tickets. By the time the dust cleared in what was themed “The Thrill in the ‘Ville” at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, neither man had managed to raise the level of recent divisive discourse to anything like meaningful dialogue....more
