Hurricane Sandy – I Lost Power But Maybe Found a Stronger Connection

It has been a few days since hurricane Sandy reached the Northeast and caused havoc for millions. I remained in my apartment in New York City for three days with my two daughters without electricity or water. The days had their challenges but I noticed how my daughters and I all stayed together the entire time. We ate, slept, talked and played together. We laughed about the non-working toilet that was starting to smell and the hard biscuits I made in the dark....more

Making Magic: Homemade Fairy House

For a long time I have been enamored with the type of fabulous creations that are found in toy catalogs like Magic Cabin. When they appear in my mailbox I hide them from my children until I’ve had a chance to drool over the gorgeous spreads depicted on the glossy pages. Oh, the lovely absence of plastic! The loose concepts leaving lots of room for childish ideas! The enticing colors and knobby shapes just right for little hands! ...more

Dear Sir, Please Do Not "Shush" My Child

Dear Sir, Hi. I’d like to introduce you to my son. His name is Charlie. He’s two-and-a-half. He’s just sat through a wedding ceremony, about 30 minutes of adult mingling time, and an entire room full of people finishing a nice meal. He only cried a couple of times, and he’s gone all day without a nap. It is now 7:30 PM, and there is a big, open dance floor waiting to get danced on. He’s the kid you just said “Ssshh, ssssshhhhhh, SSSSSHHHHHH!” to....more

I Don't Feel Like a Good Mom

"You're a good mom." I've heard it many times. My mom, my husband, therapists, coworkers, friends, aunts, grandma -- even my in-laws have said it several times. "You're a good mom." They say it and all I think about are those times when I yell. Or the times I turn on a movie so that I can write post, browse Pinterest or just have a few minutes of peace while I make dinner. ...more

Nanny Arrested in NYC Murders: Surround This Mom Blogger with Love

There are certain things in this life that I simply never want to understand. Here are a few: What life feels like to live without your children. The bone-crushing guilt that must accompany any decision that led to your children being harmed -- no matter that your choices were rational, the best any mother could do. The ridicule, finger-pointing, and judgment of complete strangers when your family tragedy becomes national news. Knowing that Marina Krim, a mother in New York City whose two children were allegedly murdered by their nanny, is dealing with all of those feelings -- and more -- makes my heart break. But I have hope....more
